I don't know how to go about asking to use layouts. I don't want to annoy the creator by using it without permission, but I don't want to go about it the wrong way... what should I do?

For the most part, layouts / code snippets that are posted on here are free to be used by anyone, unless if they state otherwise in the description.
The courteous thing to do, though, is to just comment on the layout to let the maker know you're using it, kind of like a way to give credit! Another way to give credit is simply by adding a link to the maker's SpaceHey page in your About Me!
