19.3.24 - tiktok and emos (updated)

I WAS WRONG

When i made this blog i was very ignorant and didn't even try to look at thrift apps like depop which honestly not only has closer clothes but better quality ones. I could find band tees, old brands which are now dead and it was honestly eye-opening. The reason im editing this blog saying this is because i dont want to delete it and pretend it didn't exist and i also want people who had the same mindset as me to realise there are so many other options out there. You have to search for them sure but saying shit like i did isn't an excuse.

i was scrolling on tiktok and i saw a certain video that made me delete the whole app (i re-downloaded it) and that video was about shein steals for goths and emos and ofc because the comments are tiktok are so wonderful, they were full of people mocking the video. the statement they always use is

"goths and emo culture is derived from punk culture so you can't use fast fashion."

well let's break it down...did these people ever get the it's music-based not about fashion or politics. okay sure they might be the decendents but the cultures are all individual and have not a bunch in common.

not only that but how much you want to bet these are americans saying this. i live in australia that means no hot topic or spencers for me, i also happen to live in a very small town where the only things thrift stores have are clothes for a 60 year old grandma.

all the stuff i've ever brought off shein has been fine and even if it's 'fast fashion' you can always fix it. for example, my studded bracelet i brought from shein (that i wear almost everyday) is breaking, the studs are falling off so... what am i going to do? hot gun glue it back together and even if they keep breaking until they all come off, i can repurpose it.

honestly the alternative tiktok community is one of the worst ive ever seen because in real life or on any other platform literally nobody cares. they are all just trying to fit in with the trends because, it's cool to be apart of this community but if you're going to spread negativity without any valid reasons, you're going to have to go hun. if you're new to being alternative (i am and i already know the people saying this are), then you dont have a right to act like you're better then everyone because you 'dont shop from fast fashion'.

so please stfu and everyone else have a blessed day

There is still a political element to these subcultures that makes them against fast fashion. Unfortunately it's the only thing availablt to most people but it's still important not to overconsume. DIY is a big part of these subcultures for a reason

of course! I see plenty of people that will throw things away after 1 use and i agree that is also a problem! I am trying to work to be more sustainable and not buying much from shein (i'm a total outfit repeater).

I personally don’t go for fast fashion, I try to make or thrift things, but as long as someone is listening to the music, wear whatever you like

I wish more people were like you, respectful of other people situations!
