Beginners Guide to PGP (Tech Blog #5)

I recently made a powerpoint on the basics of PGP. It's aimed towards my irl's, some of which are novices in general when it comes to computers, so keep in mind that some instructions are tailored to a specific friend group and will require critical evaluation from a learner on spacehey. Other parts are oversimplifications which might strike a nerve in those at a higher level of knowledge than the audience for this powerpoint. I ask only your forgiveness. That said, I think it looks slick.

really baller slides, I've never actually used PGP period, and the more I look into it, the more I ask.. what's the point? I know having email encryption 30 years ago was probably really cool but now we have full protocols designed around encryption and privacy.

On that, Email is rather insecure by design with or without PGP and anyone conscious enough to use PGP over a service like Discord is probably gonna just stay away from Discord as much as possible.

If there's something I'm missing please do lmk

I have stoner friends who play computer games, but other than that don't know about computers. They are already on platforms like dicord but are somewhat entrenched. It's generally too late to get them to leave because even if you make them care, they have friends who they can't make care and they won't leave behind. I convinced them to use PGP so that they could talk about drugs on discord. It worked.

Also the boon of pgp in general is that you don't need to tie yourself to a specific platform and as long as you keep track of your keys, you will always be able to continue your conversations securely anywhere over any platform. It's free as in freedom.

I guess I can see the point in that yeah. The flexibility of it could come in clutch but I've alr kinda sunk myself into matrix and am hoping to see it continue to improve. Full-fledged chat platform that does the encryption stuff for you and works....... more or less

You remind me of me when I was like you.

don't worry, still huffing copium and trying not to succumb to the fact that most communications services have some miriad of issues regarding privacy, reliability, QoL, or whatever else, and we will never achieve a legitimately good universal solution
