ugly death no redemption angel curse i love you

2day i listened to UGLY DEATH NO REDEMPTION ANGEL CURSE I LOVE YOU by Ada Rook. This album made me feel a little stupid for a second there with lines like "I'm not sick, I'm not gay, I'm not trans" and "women are all about charm"(<- this line is apparently sampled from an anime OVA called Ice?) . In context, the former (from the song im cis) reads like a general frustration with how peoples' identities, especially anyone who suffers from any kind of trauma, tend to define that person in everyone elses' eyes, to an extent where they don't really see you as just a person, even if they mean well by it. (i.e; dumbing somebody down into a gay person) The latter, (from the song VANISH/DOOM) is followed by an entire song criticizing society's obsession with the purity of womanhood (or at least, that's how it read to me. a line like "The thirst for purity will kill your soul" is pretty blunt).
That all being said, this is a fun album. I'm normally not a screamo guy, but that's because I generally get the bad impression the intention is the artist trying too hard to sound serious or tough. (I admit this is mostly from me being unfamiliar with the genre, and I don't think I've given it a try since I was a teenager.) I never got that impression here, but it's not really lighthearted or goofy either. I think it's the unapologetic embracement of femininity and refusal to be defined by pain and internal struggles, but not in a passive way where she refuses to talk about it either. In words that sound nicer; unabashed vulnerability.

Highlights
