[reading log] 11/16/21 Trucker shortage, HK food delivery worker strike

Just a quick supply chain and an HK strike article for today. I was going to read Adam Tooze's LRB essay and followup on Malm's climate politics, but it's way too many words for me to tackle right now.

[article] The Great American Trucker Shortage Isn't Real

The narrative of a labor shortage in trucking, specifically long-haul but overall, being the driving failure in the supply chain masks the ugly truth about trucking. It has, since a wave of deregulation in the 80s, been casualized and gig-ified, offers worse compensation, and made riskier (with more risk offloaded onto the drivers). Worsening conditions in trucking make it degrading and unviable for trucking workers to stay in trucking. The labor supply side of the "labor shortage" is also largely untrue, with more commercial driver's licenses being issued (and having been issued) than there are trucking jobs overall. Every point in the chain of labor, from recruitment to retention, has been made more degrading. And this is true about every part of the production and consumption cycle in this country.
