i love isopods so much theyre so silly and cool with all the different variants like omg :3 i used to keep some and they ended up thriving as a colony :33 i'm ngl i had favoritism over two of them because they were absolutely massive compared to the rest, i named them michael and tommy after michael myers and thomas hewitt :3 michael was a bit bigger than tommy :D
anyways i just find isopods soooo cool like all the different species and variations omg. my favorites are the zebra isopods and ember bees :33 i just love their color so much. i think the thin white stripes on the zebras look sooo cool, and then the orange/red/yellow stripes on the ember bees,,, come onnnn so cool :3
isopods are not actually bugs or insects, they're actually crustaceans, even the non aquatic ones :3 they all have gills, which is why the land isopods need to live in damp environments. although some species can survive and thrive in drier areas, the majority thrive in humid, damp areas. and also even tho the land isopods have gills, they can still drown !! ugh i find them so cool :33
not all of them can roll into a ball :D only the isopod species that fall under "armadillidium" have that defense mechanism !! to my knowledge the other two species types(?) are porcellio and oniscus :3 edit: there is definitely more than porcellio and oniscus, like im sure theres more than i could count, but those are the only ones i knew of at the time of writing :))
there are literally thousands of different color variations and shapes. and some are extremely expensive even if you're just buying a pair online !!! some of the popular species, online at least, are rubber duckys, magic potion, clown isopods, thai spiky isopod, diary cows, cappucino, dwarf whites, powder blue, powder orange, zebra, lava isopods, white skull,, there's tonsss more but those are some that i can remember off the top of my head :3 they do have scientific names, but these are easier to remember and are fun ^-^ i also cant remember if these guys are popular, but giant canyon isopods are pretty cool, theyre one of the species that can live in drier climates :D
also aslo aslo last thing, i dont know much at all abt aquatic isopods, but i loveee kelp isopods theyre so cute :3 i so would like to keep some, theyre so cute, but i kinda doubt i would be able to keep them. i dont think you can really buy them any where, and i have no idea where you would be able to find them in the wild. the only other two aquatic isopods that i vaguely know of are the giant isopod and the parasitic tongue eating louse.
ok thats all i just love info dumping abt isopods sometimes and i just love love love looking at all the different species n what not, theyre so cool :3
