was the phantom really the villain of the story or naught but a haunted man who held the capacity to love someone he believed to be too good for him?

he was just a poor men who wanted to feel loved but didnt know how to get someone lo love him
THIS. he wasn't evil, but the opera house and theatregoers painted him as such because of his unconventional self-help methods. he was really just a man in love with his angel of music

he felt betrayed by her after she fell in love with raoul, thus where all i ask of you (reprise) comes in. he wanted her all to himself, as desperation for love had consumed him. he even said himself in i remember/stranger than you dreamt it that he craves beauty, likely talking about how he wishes he had someone to love (after all, love is regarded as a beautiful thing) and he turned to christine. he felt so hurt and lost by the end of act one that his emotions fueled his actions in act two
