The Crow - new adaptation

Anyone who knows me knows that The Crow is my all-time favorite movie. I love every single thing about it. Set design, soundtrack, plot, performances, costumes, lighting, you name it. My absolute favorite thing about it is its message about love & death. But I can write a small essay about that some other time.

I didn't know this until way later that this iconic film was based on a comic book. Being a huge comic nerd as well, I was excited to learn this & gave it a read. Absolutely loved that too. There were some very noticeable differences between the film & the book, as with any adaptation. It's a rare instance of a film becoming more well-known & loved than the source material. It's crazy how massively unbalanced it is.

I bring this all up to talk about the upcoming new crow movie. Apparently, this is not a reboot of the film but it's actually aiming to be a more accurate adaptation of the forementioned comic book. But again, since a majority of fans don't even know of the comic's existence, it's already pissing people off. And because this simply can't go un-mentioned whenever bringing this franchise up, Brandon Lee tragically died making the movie. So, no matter what they do, it's going to seem like a slap in the face to his legacy. Another thing I didn't know until way later is that The Crow actually does have sequels. They bombed & fans despise them simply because of the tragedy mentioned. "If it's not Brandon Lee, it's not The Crow." I've heard & seen people say. However, one positive thing I can say about remakes/reboots/etc in general, is that it can always potentially bring in new fans to discover the classics.

Based on the first look photos alone, I think Bill Skarsgard's get-up just looks ridiculous. Like a monochrome version of the Jared Leto Joker. And a portrait tattoo where his nipple is supposed be an eyeball? Ugh... It doesn't give Eric Draven at all, even by comic book standards.

I just don't see this film doing well, but only time will tell. I sincerely hope it doesn't tarnish Bill's career. He's a very talented actor.

What are your thoughts?
