3ds or ds?

I'm planning on buying either one but idk which one. Do you guys know?? Game wise and stuff... also what's the difference?? Also this might be a rlly stupid question but are 3ds games compatible with ds and vice versa? At least with downloading ROMs. And where is modding easier?? Any help is appreciated. Thanks!! ❤

I don't know If you already decided but I recommend you a New 3DS, because it's very easy to emulate DS games and also the 3DS has compatibility with DS games

ive got a 3ds but i dont really see a difference other than the fact a ds cant run certain games.,, theyre so easy to mod btw using https://dsi.cfw.guide/ !!! dont worry it might look really busy/complicated but its so step by step easy all u need is some sort of micro sd card reader u can put into a laptop u can buy online for super cheap and ur good to go

Also is there any way to differentiate the 3ds from the ds? I've seen images of them and to me they pretty much look identical. I'm planning on buying a second hand 3ds that's why. Also is there anything i have to look out for (Except broken screens and stuff)?

I agree with the other comment!
I've played with a 3DS my entire life (in the past, I played it normally but now I've got it modded) so obviously anything I say will be extremely biased lol BUT I will say that normally, a 3DS can definitely play DS games. There are also emulators (? Don't know if that's the right word) that you can install on a 3DS to download DS games; haven't tried it personally myself but I do plan to someday. Normally, you can't play 3DS games on a DS but I'm sure there's probably some way to do it nowadays? Though, I'm pretty sure there'd be no way for yo to ever get games in 3D (which...isn't all that exciting, tbh. Some games have some action scenes in them that looks cooler in 3D + Flipnote 3D and the other art app could be cool if that's what you like but...that's all there is to it. Technically, there's, like, 2 basic games (one "game" is just using AR cards lol) that are already installed in a 3DS that play around with the 3D mechanic but they're ok...I don't think you'd miss out on much)

I've always had an old 3DSXL so I can definitely say it's bigger than a DS, if that matters. Can't say much for a normal 3DS nor for the new one.
Modding my 3DS was pretty easy as theres already a nice guide online for it and as a person who has literally never nodded anything before, I got through it with very little problems! And I love to customize my theme :3 maybe you can do that for a DS, I have no idea

I'd get a 3DS system if you can afford it since DS games are compatible with them while 3Ds games do NOT work on a DS, even if you snip the bit of plastic off that's meant to keep the game from going into a DS/DSi. The new 3DS models (N3DS) have some slight hardware upgrades compared to the old 3Ds models (O3Ds) that can help speed up load times and handle some lag better, but there's not many games specifically made for the N3DS.

Not sure if this would be something you'd want to do, but I know the 3Ds family of handhelds are stupid easy to software mod. Personally I'd suggest it since the 3Ds e-shop is closing soon. I've got no clue how DS/DSi modding is since I've never modded one.

The O3DS xl has larger screens which are really nice from personal experience. My main handheld is an O3DS.

What you said is really helpful. Thanks again!!

I'm glad I could help you out! If you do end up getting a 3DS and softmodding it, use this guide for it. It's pretty easy as long as you just follow the instructions. I do not recommend looking for video guides that aren't on this since they tend to be out of date and this guide is actually kept up to date: https://3ds.hacks.guide/

Of course! Feel free to try reaching out to me if you need help with 3DS modding. I won't say I'm an expert but I've got a good handle on the basics after having my systems modded for years.
