The disturbing, confusing, and fascinating lore of "Turnip Boy commits Tax Evasion"

WARNING: THIS BLOG CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR THE GAME "TURNIP BOY COMMTS TAX EVASION" READ AT YOUR OWN DISCRESSION.

Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion started out as a fun small game released on April 22, 2021, with a demo later being released on Newgrounds on January 23, 2022, and is now currently, one of my favorite games released on the Nintendo Switch. Filled with cute characters, fun gameplay, and a short, yet captivating story filled with comedy straight out of 2020 internet humor, this game is bound to make you laugh at one point or another.

The basic storyline:

You control the character Turnip Boy, a chaotic neutral, sentient, anti-capitalist turnip, who hates anything to do with taxes, as mentioned in the title, you commit tax evasion, and now need to do tasks for the mayor of Veggie-vill, Mayor Onion, to get your greenhouse back after being evicted. I won't talk about too much of the game hear, but I want to talk about the most disturbing part of this game: why exactly all of these fruits and vegetables are sentient in the first place.

The Life of Elizabeth "Liz" Rigsby, and the nuclear apocalypse of 2020:

By the looks of it in her battle sprite, Liz is a pre-teen girl, around 12-14 years old, who lives with her brother, paternal uncle, and father. During her adolescence, her brother, Matt, had been drafted, presumably into the army, or the army equivalent, around the same time as what I personally assume was a Nuclear bomb attack, causing her and her remaining family to flee into a bunker in the woods far from their house. The nuclear waste has caused the fruits and vegetables that they grew on their farm to become sentient, and human-like,  so human-like to the point that they formed their own capitalist government, go figure.

The Bunker:

Your fourth, and final task from mayor onion is to retrieve a laser pointer from the bunker in weapons woods, before this however you need to do a small side mission in the graveyard to get a shovel to open the hatch. once you descend into the bunker, blaring alarms start playing in the back, causing a weird sense of panic and fear to fall over you as you see a figure of a person, you continue to follow the figures into the bunker until you walk into a room containing the hazmat suit, a fire flower, and a closet. while working on the puzzle that helps you obtain the hazmat suit, the glowing effect you still have on from the goop you grabbed on Mayor onions third fetch quest, causes something inside of the closet to shake, maybe clothes? or a pair of shoes? it does say anything can be brought to life with it, and on the way up here we brought a bunch of rotten food to life, so why not clothes? oh, you wish it was clothes.

Because the moment you get into the boss arena, the two human-like figures disappear behind a fortified door, and behind you, is a young girl who has been mutated by the radioactive goop, but it's not any young girl. Its Liz.

The Liz Bossfight:

Liz's boss fight is considered to be the most difficult boss fight in the game, it takes a good moment to understand how her mechanics work, but once you manage to understand her attack patterns, you can actually kill her quite fast using the two fire flowers in the room. After defeating Liz, the humans wont come out of the fortified room, and you cant go in, and in the other room off to the left is the laser pointer that belongs to Liz's late cat, wow, this is fucked up :D

Quick finnal thoughts:

Though this game is very cute on the outside, with a very fun yet chaotic storyline, as well as a very chaotic protagonist, its hidden horror elements imeeditly facinated me, its in the same vain as Undertales True Lab, showing the secret messed up world benith all of the sunshine and rainbows. If you can, PLEASE go play this game, its a short, yet entertaining story with a fun way to keep playing afterwards.

Now im going to go, its currently 5 am and I have PSAT's in two hours, i started writing this at 11pm, slept, and finished at 5, so if the writings messy i really dont care, i just wanted to write abt this cool ass game i like :)
