Hello everyone! Here are (some of) my favorite first watches of february, hope you enjoy and maybe you'll find something to add to your watchlist! 💜
💜 Lisa Frankenstein (2024) dir. Zelda Williams
• horror, comedy, romance
From the writer of Jennifer's Body comes another incredible, beautiful and campy teen girl horror comedy!!! This movie was just released in theaters and is already available digitally, it's not doing so great at the box office unfortunately but it's undoubtedly an instant cult classic! I'm absolutely obsessed with everything about this movie, from the cinematography and set design to the dream sequences to Lisa's characterization to the absolutely unhinged and chaotic third act. So cute and morbid and perfect for fans of Tim Burton, Heathers (1989) and horror comedies. I'm sure many viewers (including myself) will see themselves reflected in Lisa. Also YAY for an ACTUALLY GOTH main character who canonically listens to goth music!!!! Awesome soundtrack btw <3
💜 My Life Without Me (2003) dir. Isabel Coixet
• drama
This is a very sad drama about a young mother who learns she is terminally ill and makes a list of things she wants to do in the few months she has left to live. Now, I know this premise sounds kinda lifetime-esque, and in lesser hands maybe it would've been reduced to that type of movie, but I think the fact that it's an indie movie saves it from that fate. Instead, this movie is raw yet artful, a genuine tearjerker but not in a way that feels forced, well acted and well directed. This is in my opinion a perfect rainy/cloudy day movie. It's warm but cold at the same time, like a hug right before saying goodbye. There was a plotline involving Mark Ruffalo that seemed a bit unnecessary to me but still, this is movie is genuinely great in my opinion. It also features Debbie Harry as the main character's mother!
💜 Gleaming the Cube (1989) dir. Graeme Clifford
• crime, action
An extremely silly, but at the same time very sensitively done, murder mystery... on skateboards!!! A young Christian Slater stars as a punky skater teen who decides to take matters into his own hands after the police fails him and his family regarding a loved one's death. This movie has some very sad and even dark moments regarding the main character's grief, which I thought were handled very well, but it also becomes increasingly more energetic and chaotic as it goes on, culminating in an epic chase scene featuring awesome and totally unrealistic skating tricks! Also Tony Hawk is there! Very '80s, very fun and in my opinion underrated movie, apparently a lot of people don't like it but I had an absolute blast watching it, super fun !!
💜 Silvia Prieto (1999) dir. Martín Rejtman
• comedy
A fun little indie comedy from Argentina, very in the vein of Frances Ha but more slice-of-life-y and more focused on the comedy, if that sounds like your kinda thing definitely give it a try, it's a very enjoyable and chill time! :) I'm obsessed when movies show the increasingly random ways in which random people's lives are connected and this movie does that very well!!
💜 Morgiana (1972) dir. Juraj Herz (who also directed one of the best fairy tale movies of all time aka 1978 Beauty and the Beast!!!)
• horror(?), drama, dark fairytale
Gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous czech gothic fairy tale type movie about an unhinged, evil woman with great makeup who wants to slowly kill her sister with a special kind of poison. This movie is very suspenseful and engaging, it's really easy to get invested in the story and to want to know more about the main character's evil plans, aside from that really the big star is the set decoration, the sisters live in a gothic mansion so you just know the atmosphere will be incredible, and the music only adds to its dark and brooding tone. So dramatic in the best of ways with some super pretty, psychedelic nightmarish sequences! The whole movie is on youtube with english subs! :))
⚠️TW: suicide
💜 Poor Things (2023) dir. Yorgos Lanthimos
• fantasy, sci-fi, (dark) comedy
⚠️I feel that I should warn that this movie is *very* explicit and touches on some taboo topics so if you're uncomfortable with that or way too young I suggest skipping it⚠️.
How do I even begin to talk about Poor Things? This oscar-nominated movie has been very divisive and controversial since its release, and beware, it is a *lot*. Now with all of that being said, I personally ADORED it. I understand why it's not for everyone, but it is extremely for me. I had an incredible experience watching this in the theater, it felt magical. Emma Stone is absolutely magnetic and embodies her character fully, she really became someone else. I was never bored watching this movie, not just because of the plot and the worldbuilding but also because visually it's so amazing and rich and there's always something to look at. Wonderfully weird and I could go on about it forever
