I am starting to lose interest in the internet. Everything is becoming monotonous, annoying, constant ads, politics and negativity. It has really been increasing my depression and real life is starting to feel like an escape from the internet nowadays. Maybe that's how it's supposed to be.
I'm so tired of seeing the shallow influencers that push products, the constant posts about Gaza/Israel, all the constant political complaints, people whining about first world problems, people that are sensitive snowflakes about EVERYTHING, constant doomsday posts about the economy/job market, etc. I'm just so sick of all of it.Β
I miss when the internet wasn't a cesspool of bullshit and negativity all the time. I hate also that social media has become so bland with no customization options at all and it's now turned into brainrotting 30 second videos with ads every other video you can't skip and algorithms that clog up your feed with things you DON'T want instead of just being able to see your friends posts. Nobody my age wants to take the time to code fun websites and create an online community for themselves or blog, they just want to scroll through content for 2 seconds that they won't even remember and post depressing posts that make them look "woke".Β
I can't handle it anymore, it's starting to get to me more than I'd like to admit. I have already started blocking Youtube ads completely and only use social media to message people nowadays or find funny memes. I don't even look at my feed anymore, and hobbies that are off a screen are becoming more appealing to me. I've found myself wanting to reach for a book to read more than scroll through social media and getting overstimulated.Β
I just feel like my life is simpler when I take away all the digital garbage. The only times I want to use the internet is for mobile games, finding memes on Pinterest, occasionally scrolling through Reddit, reading about things that I want to learn more about/get help with and browsing around Neocities/coding my own for fun. Otherwise, I've just gotten more distant from it.
I think my grandma was right when she said to "get off the 'box'" (referring to my cell phone). There's a lot of fun things to do outside of a screen and hobbies really enrich your life. So for now I'm going to keep going in this direction. Though I may log in from time to time, I will be much less active overall.

Like a weekago i discovered bitview, net wich is an old youtube imitation, and i realized how fun the internet used to be 15 years ago.
people got popular bc they where funny, videos where about passion and fun, and not a way to get money.
mentization ruined the internet. well, thats my theory.
ive been having fun so far in spacehey, although, i never got to use the original myspace

Outside of this website, the only actual social media website (no, this does not include forums) I have an account on is YouTube. I will occasionally scroll through old Reddit, but I don't have an account there (nor do I plan to make one).
Also, I've recently created a website if you wanna check it out (it's still a MAJOR work in progress, though): https://life-in-the-2000s.neocities.org/

if you want to become free of the chains of internet-based-derealization, you have to first drop the baggage of language and perspective it forces you to pick up in order to communicate. you have to stop looking at things as either being "woke" or whatever the opposite to that nebulous concept would be. you have to drop the idea that the internet exists in a myopic lens, fully centered around social media.
to learn more about the world, you have to drop your preconceived notions about existence. there is no moral, there is no causation, there is no reasoning. the sun rises every day because of the fact that we orbit it, sure, but its not like the sun has any moral reasoning it has to provide in order to justify its continued shining. the sun simply is, the sun simply exists.
the internet as a whole is more than just a few degrading social media platforms, its more than the web itself. there are plenty of internet communities that exist and thrive because of their indifference to the way most places these days want to trend towards. they aren't thriving because they are a reactionary force against all that is bad in the world. they aren't spending their efforts into making posts that talk about how bad the world's state is in, they aren't even making posts that critcize those that make such types of criticism. they just do what they can to be free, to be free, to be free from that.
one has to wonder if their perspective on their society is the very thing that funnels them into a given role

i wanted to make sure this didnt get lost in translation β im not trying to derail you from your journey. i think the progress you've talked about has been a step in the right direction. if doing this is something that makes you feel happy or more fulfilled, then that's a good thing and you should chase that. i am only trying to warn you of the danger of letting yourself believe something as wide as the internet is a place that will only offer one viewpoint of the world. this simply isnt true at all! thats what the doomscrollers and ceos would want you to think, because thats how they can make money off it. create the problem so you can sell the solution. if they can make money off anything, including your emotions, they will try their damndest. so fuck em, do what makes you happy. but doing so means you have to drop the self-imposed chains, it means you have to stop thinking you have to write about your frustration in order to justify any possible change to it. like the breeze through the trees or the water in a stream, let yourself flow and simply be. roll over the hill, crash into the beach, return to the body, and become light enough to fly all over again. because you can simply be, because you've got this

No, I totally understand this feeling. I'm so sick of how monotone everything has become, and that the communities I was once a part of are either dead, or so big that they've become toxic. I'm thankful that I'm one of the few that still enjoys older websites and blogging like you mentioned, however with that it means barely anyone my age is interested in the same things as me. It really hurts since I feel like I don't belong in real life or even the internet because of how much things have changed.
On a brighter note, it's very understandable that you feel like this, in fact I think it's great you looked past the chokehold the internet has on most people nowadays and you instead focus on yourself and your hobbies. I 100% think you should take breaks from the internet, I might do the same. If it's okay, I'm willing to talk more if needed :]

I feel the exact same way as you here. I'm the living definition of the term "anachronist" and I belong to the 2000s decade instead of the stupid 2020s.
