emo ugh

little rant about hot topic emos thinking they know everything about emo. so i try my hardest not to be a gatekeeper but it's soooo hard when these 15 year old self proclaimed "scenemos" try to give people a lesson on emo. like first of all the emo you subscribing to has such loose connection to emo in the first place that trying to show what emo really is and isnt just is laughable like you're trying to be a historian here??? okay im getting ahead of myself i swear im internet bffs with a scenemo (shoutout santi). so this all started when i was on my twitter and i came upon a thread called "what emo is and isnt: a thread on the subculture", so naturally i clicked on it to see what was up and well i already had an idea it was going to make me shake my head, but boy oh boyyyy did it make me rage. it starts off with a disclaimer saying "oh im not a historian", well clearly, because you shouldve stopped this at that point. my biggest gripe with this thread is the way they organize the "waves" of emo. now i actually hateeee using waves to talk about emo because i feel like it over-simplifies certain eras far too much and leaves out important bands that really helped shape what emo currently is. the first wave bands tweet was fine, most of the basics and some really random ones like Monsula (sure a bay area band that totally makes sense to add and not a band like Fire Party). then it starts to get bad, their "wave 2" starts from 1990-2000 which causes them to add Alesana into wave 2 (facepalm). not only that but they add bands like the hated, moss icon, sliver bearing into wave 2???? THATS VERY OBVIOUSLY STILL FIRST WAVE???????? HOW WOULD THAT BE 2ND WAVE EMO IT MAKES NO SENSE ITS STILL THE SAME SONICALLY!!!!!!! UGH. now if youre still reading this and for some reason do not know what would be considered 2nd wave emo i'll explain it simply; midwest emo. that is and considered by everyone who has a brain what 2nd wave emo is. point blank. now sure theres some non midwest emo bands coming up in different areas around the US that help define more what 2nd wave emo is, but that all comes back into my hatred for using waves to describe emo eras, anyways. the bands that exist in 2nd wave emo are mentioned later on, we will get to that. next we have some rambling of nothingness and this person trying to over analyze a made up wave of emo. then they start talking about commercialism which at this point doesnt make sense yet becuz the commercialism of emo should be talked about but with a completely different set of bands like so far (apart from the random Alesana mention) everything is diy...whatever. they then decide to call wave three...wait for it... HARDCORE EMO. WHAT THE FLIP DO YOU THINK EMOCORE MEANTTTTTTTTT. i would give them the benefit of the doubt and assume they meant to say screamo (since most of those bands can also fall under hardcore punk) but no they didnt, because of course the first mention of screamo in the thread is to talk about mtv bands. they didnt mention any bands in this section but the weird way they try to explain what music they mean leads me to believe they were talking about screamo (theyre just too stupid to know that) and bands like Orchid (the only screamo band this kid probably knows). so after failing to describe early screamo, we get to my just favorite part of the entire thread, the way wave four is described. for context, this wave is generally referred to "emo revival" (late 00s-late 2010s) and bands like La Dispute and Touche Amore fall into it. but in this lovely thread wave four or (direct quote) "post indie emo" (gag) has bands like Sunny Day Real Estate, Mineral, Joan of Arc, Braid, and The Get Up Kids...this is 2nd wave emo. why is it being called 4th wave????? hell if i know. the they make two tweets about how by 1999 bands like Jimmy Eat World and Thursday (a band that had only had their debut album out on an indie label in 99) were already on rotation on MTV. sorry i need to talk about the Thursday comment more WHAT DO YOU MEANNNNN THURSDAY WAS ON ROTATION ON MTV IN 1999??????? THEY ONLY HAD WAITING OUT AND THAT GAVE THEM NO MAINSTREAM SUCCESS??? THEY HIT "MAINSTREAM" WITH FULL COLLAPSE IN 2001. this was when i really knew this kid had absolutely no idea what they were talking about and they should deff not be trying to inform other kids about what emo is and isnt. like how do you make a claim that is so irrefutably wrong when trying to make an "informative" thread. is fact checking not a thing anymore? did you think no one who read that would be a fan of Thursday and see such a wrong statement about them? sorry, i just saw Thursday at center barricade a few weeks ago so they're very much on my mind. theyre kinda my favorite band and ppl are stupid. then they mention how screamo was used to define this type of emo with the younger kids which like yea i'll give them that but only one tweet was used for this when so much more couldve been said. anyways, the rest of the thread is trying to explain how mcr and patd are still emo culturally which like whatever i'll call mcr emo idc so im not gonna talk about that in this rant. and fin, thats all the specific callouts about the thread. now if you read this emo word vomit and youre wondering hey why do you care so much? the answer is im annoying about emo and i hate when younger kids try to act like the emo god with soooo much knowledge and try to preach to everyone that they are the emo king, but have only been emo for like a year and clearly dont know shit. if youre going to make an informative thread about something then know your shit!! its not hard!! idc if youre 14 and you think mcr is the best emo band, we all start somewhere!! just try not to get in over your head and explain emo to people while getting everything wrong. what made me annoyed overall was seeing the bookmarks on certain tweets that had such wrong information, because its probably 14 year olds who just want to learn more about emo to not get called a poser but theyre learning wrong information that if they try to restate theyll get clowned on. maybe im being overdramatic but hey i am emo so. if you want to learn more about emo and its history theres dozens of books or articles written by people who were in the scene when it was going on. My recommendation: Negatives by Amy Fleisher Madden, its a photographic archive of emo from 1996-2006 and its a fun read that helps you learn about a bunch of emo bands and gives you some insight to that time. thats it, i just spent my saturday night writing this long ass rant about emo baiiiiii
