Though the song hasn't been relevant in several months now, it's easy for me to run into reminders of 'Try That In A Small Town.' One primary reminder being my hometowns city hall, which I pass semi-frequently when out on drives. This building of course being featured in the music video, and providing a large portion of controversy due to a lynching that occurred there.
It's kind've fucking stupid that the video was filmed there. There's no point. I don't know whose idea it was to film there, but whoever had the idea 100% knew about the history behind it. Columbia is by no means a 'small town.' 43,000 people live there. God knows it's not a place where yer neighbor is looking out for you either. Everyone hates eachother. Everyone is addicted to drugs. Everyone is looking for easy ways out of their problems.
What else can you do in an underdeveloped highly populated town? Crime is everywhere, and nothing is being managed. The mall got converted into a shitty strip mall. There's no skate park. There's no roller rink, not anymore.
Where do the youth go to hang out? Any other town. Usually Spring Hill, or Nashville.
Having spent 18 years of my life there, suffering through many traumas no neighbors cared about, the city is nowhere near this picture perfect idea of a 'small town' where everyone 'helps eachother.'
But, it does have an underground KKK problem, with flyers being posted around near government buildings, and little is done over it. So I guess the town has that going for it.
Despite all the problems, I always feel a strong sense of homeliness and nostalgia when driving through the busy streets, and the broken down suburbs.
Someday, I won't see it as my home anymore.
I hope it's sooner rather than later.
