mentioned this briefly in my last blog post but does anyone else here who uses instagram need to get "dont use reels" tattooed on their face or something?? bc as much as i hate reels and other short form video i always subconsciously click on the reels tab and scroll for like 30 minutes and i HATE IT. not just because of the videos themselves but because of the comments bro. ive never seen such a large amount of proudly stupid, violent, and bigoted assholes in one comment section before, like usually trolling and shit gets buried if we follow ye old addage of "dont feed the trolls" but theres something special about reels comments that attracts all the worst people.
objectively the worst of it are the violent comments. these tend to be hurled towards children and animals. especially disabled ones. just, yknow, totally normal for a large group of adult men to all collectively tell a parent to murder their young child for being disabled. being almost totally anonymous gives motherfuckers a very special level of audacity. but like, does anyone else think people's thoughts are actually getting more deranged, or do yall think people were always like this and just feel more comfortable getting worse for whatever reason? im sure this type of stuff always existed on the internet of course but it seems way more amplified lately.
but what gets to me personally is people who claim "animal abuse" on LITERALLY FUCKING EVERYTHING. listen okay. i work with animals. specifically dogs. im not gonna claim to be a dog expert, but i sure as hell know what is and isnt abusive.
NO, dyeing your dog is not abusive. its dog safe dye and isnt anywhere near the same level as docking tails and ears for looks. the dye washes out but dogs cant regrow body parts. these two things are not comparable in the slightest.
NO, its not abusive to keep a disabled pet. if taken care of properly they live happy and healthy lives just like any other animal. its cruel to euthanize an animal for having a disability that doesn't effect their quality of life.
NO, its not abusive to give a dog a job. working breeds were bred specifically to DO jobs, not to mention they're typically high energy for that reason. not giving a working dog a job to do is neglectful and they will start taking out their energy and natural instincts on you and other people or pets in your house which can easily lead to property damage or physical harm. but when you DO give that dog a way to burn off all that energy, and properly train them as well, they're happy and thriving. working dogs LOVE their jobs. if you for whatever reason can't provide a working dog a job, then its probably best to either adopt from a shelter instead or find a breed that better fits your lifestyle. it's not gonna kill you to pass up that australian shepherd puppy for a mild mannered mutt from the pound.
and do i need to go in depth about all the homophobia, racism, etc present in those damn comment sections? i saw people calling a girl slurs on a video about fucking knitting because she had short hair so they just, assumed she was an effeminate boy. it was the entire comment section. on a video about KNITTING. and the people who think its so funny and clever to spell out the n word in gifs... it almost never works of course because its not funny in any context, its unoriginal and stupid.
sorry for this super long rant im just so sick of this. as much as i wanna just stop, short form video is addictive, and theres also something weirdly addictive about trying to find negative comments to get mad at, like the state of the internet has made us crave negativity and thats probably a factor in why these comments are so shitty in the first place. theres probably no deeper explanation though. people are probably just assholes. eugh. gross.

no cuz this is actually so real. i havent touched insta since my phone got taken last november but holy shit the comments on anything mildly nice or artsy or pro lgbtq or anything that isnt just a barrage of shitty news and bigotry always always has one comment shitting on everything.
the post minecraft made abt mojang being pro gay and had pride flags on mc avatars got SO much homophobia and transphobic comments it literally hurt to read them and see how quickly those comments got likes by the thousands.
in the end mc had to turn off the comments cuz it was so bad

what's worse is instagram encourages that behavior. you could report a comment that straight up just says "kill all gays" and instagram will be like um <:3 i dont see anything wrong with this <:3 um you can just block them if youre uncomfortable <:3 but god forbid you jokingly call your friend a mean name or instagram will be on you banning your whole account in no time. ive lost 2 accounts to false suspensions with absolutely no reason attached to them and even though they were supposed to be temporary my accounts were never reinstated. point being that instagram's rampant bigotry problem is probably due to how instagram does jack to stop it.
