instagram reels comments make me wanna explode (rant)

mentioned this briefly in my last blog post but does anyone else here who uses instagram need to get "dont use reels" tattooed on their face or something?? bc as much as i hate reels and other short form video i always subconsciously click on the reels tab and scroll for like 30 minutes and i HATE IT. not just because of the videos themselves but because of the comments bro. ive never seen such a large amount of proudly stupid, violent, and bigoted assholes in one comment section before, like usually trolling and shit gets buried if we follow ye old addage of "dont feed the trolls" but theres something special about reels comments that attracts all the worst people.

objectively the worst of it are the violent comments. these tend to be hurled towards children and animals. especially disabled ones. just, yknow, totally normal for a large group of adult men to all collectively tell a parent to murder their young child for being disabled. being almost totally anonymous gives motherfuckers a very special level of audacity. but like, does anyone else think people's thoughts are actually getting more deranged, or do yall think people were always like this and just feel more comfortable getting worse for whatever reason? im sure this type of stuff always existed on the internet of course but it seems way more amplified lately.

but what gets to me personally is people who claim "animal abuse" on LITERALLY FUCKING EVERYTHING. listen okay. i work with animals. specifically dogs. im not gonna claim to be a dog expert, but i sure as hell know what is and isnt abusive.

NO, dyeing your dog is not abusive. its dog safe dye and isnt anywhere near the same level as docking tails and ears for looks. the dye washes out but dogs cant regrow body parts. these two things are not comparable in the slightest.

NO, its not abusive to keep a disabled pet. if taken care of properly they live happy and healthy lives just like any other animal. its cruel to euthanize an animal for having a disability that doesn't effect their quality of life.

NO, its not abusive to give a dog a job. working breeds were bred specifically to DO jobs, not to mention they're typically high energy for that reason. not giving a working dog a job to do is neglectful and they will start taking out their energy and natural instincts on you and other people or pets in your house which can easily lead to property damage or physical harm. but when you DO give that dog a way to burn off all that energy, and properly train them as well, they're happy and thriving. working dogs LOVE their jobs. if you for whatever reason can't provide a working dog a job, then its probably best to either adopt from a shelter instead or find a breed that better fits your lifestyle. it's not gonna kill you to pass up that australian shepherd puppy for a mild mannered mutt from the pound.

and do i need to go in depth about all the homophobia, racism, etc present in those damn comment sections? i saw people calling a girl slurs on a video about fucking knitting because she had short hair so they just, assumed she was an effeminate boy. it was the entire comment section. on a video about KNITTING. and the people who think its so funny and clever to spell out the n word in gifs... it almost never works of course because its not funny in any context, its unoriginal and stupid.

sorry for this super long rant im just so sick of this. as much as i wanna just stop, short form video is addictive, and theres also something weirdly addictive about trying to find negative comments to get mad at, like the state of the internet has made us crave negativity and thats probably a factor in why these comments are so shitty in the first place. theres probably no deeper explanation though. people are probably just assholes. eugh. gross.

no cuz this is actually so real. i havent touched insta since my phone got taken last november but holy shit the comments on anything mildly nice or artsy or pro lgbtq or anything that isnt just a barrage of shitty news and bigotry always always has one comment shitting on everything.

the post minecraft made abt mojang being pro gay and had pride flags on mc avatars got SO much homophobia and transphobic comments it literally hurt to read them and see how quickly those comments got likes by the thousands.
in the end mc had to turn off the comments cuz it was so bad

what's worse is instagram encourages that behavior. you could report a comment that straight up just says "kill all gays" and instagram will be like um <:3 i dont see anything wrong with this <:3 um you can just block them if youre uncomfortable <:3 but god forbid you jokingly call your friend a mean name or instagram will be on you banning your whole account in no time. ive lost 2 accounts to false suspensions with absolutely no reason attached to them and even though they were supposed to be temporary my accounts were never reinstated. point being that instagram's rampant bigotry problem is probably due to how instagram does jack to stop it.

bro the amt of times i got warned bc i said "murder" in a sentence regardless of context and being told "it goes against our community guidelines !!!1!11" is such bullshit when you see the literal gore and straight up nightmare fuel created to actually disturbed on reels if u scroll long enough is crazy

honestly? im trying! its weirdly kinda hard to just like, delete it. but ive been trying to reduce my activity at least. goal is to eventually become so detached from it that i uninstall it for good lmao. maybe that (and this whole post) is just a me problem ngl

Go cold turkey and just delete it. If it offers you no actual value and does not make you happy, don't do it, because when you keep doing it you feel worse. Making excuses or slowing down the process will put off the actual act of getting rid of the problem. If you have a mice infestation, you call an exterminator, you don't wait for them to get tired so you can throw them out.

eh.. true. but every time ive tried just deleting it i always seem to go back. maybe i should just like, will myself to not download it again, lol, cuz that place is just a shithole

What wills you to go back? Is some part of you empty without it? In many cases like this it seems something genuinely enriching has to be supplanted with the placebo (let us call Instagram that), so when the placebo is gone the person feels the will to get it back, despite the placebo not fixing anything in the first place. I could be wrong though.

i think its the fact that its where ive been the longest and have the largest platform. granted its only 800 followers, but still, ive made lots of cool mutuals and discovered a lot of artists i look up to on instagram. while the exact same is true about Newgrounds which is a platform i ACTUALLY like to use i have some weird emotional connection to instagram. and i think thats the point in all honesty, after all, if you're attached or addicted, you use the app more and see more ads and the company gets more money. despite every annoying thing about instagram that pushes me to hate it i just feel like im abandoning everything if i leave? and like, dont get me wrong, thats a legit problem. im fully aware of it! i cant even watch TV or play video games without breaking my attention away to scroll through instagram, let alone work up the energy to go out or learn to cook or go shopping or any number of things i wanna do more. i dont wanna call it a straight up addiction but i will say my reliance on instagram is way unhealthy

Ah, there is the problem. The attachment. Instagram is not a living, breathing thing, but your attachment to it is supplanting an actual need for some living breathing thing. You are letting the media control you when it is you that controls it, when it is you that moves your fingers to touch your keyboard or phone screen. The value it offers you is something you can find literally anywhere on the internet, or even just by going out to a museum- which will introduce you to something genuinely new, without the fine tuned limits of the algorithm.
What are you actually abandoning? How many of those followers do your regularly talk to, or even think about daily? How many of them have you formed a genuine connection with? What do they provide other than numbers on a screen?
Also- if you are wasting time doomscrolling instead of learning a skill, cooking, reading, or go shopping, most of these being incredibly important for one's life, then it is an addiction. Period. Addictions stop at the hand of the user, and no excuses will be more effective than nipping the problem in the bud before it gets worse. And it will, as all addictions do. If you have enough capability to type these replies to me, you certainly have enough will and responsibility to delete an app from your phone. It is more than it not having any value, it is actively negatively impacting your life. You don't need it.

well when you put it like that... i only have connections to a small portion of my followers, and pretty much all of them have my discord.. any artists i look up to most likely post to more than just instagram... i have very little will to actually interact with people on there unlike other platforms where i'd say im very active in the community and have made lots of friends, its really just a place to dump my art and vanish... so yeah, i guess the connection i have to instagram isnt a connection at all, its an addiction.
also, thank you. this is genuinely really helpful! ive been struggling to really accept that its a legit addiction. i think ive always felt silly for beimg addicted to something as dumb as a single social media platform. im gonna go ahead and delete it as soon as im done checking my notifs here lol. ive been telling myself (and my friends have been telling me) to delete it for a long time now and i guess the only way to do that is to just, yknow, do it. again. thank you
