spacehey + web in general thoughts

i've been active on the internet for a while and have always preferred "alternate" social media-- i bounced right off facebook back when people used it, same with twitter and instagram. the only "real" social media i have used consistently is tumblr, and i used it before its heyday and now have stayed on since it died down and out of the public discourse.

in that time some of the alternative or smaller sites i've had a social presence on have died or i have left them for a variety of reasons-- certain mastodon instances, quotev, different rp forums, my earliest one was 'quizilla'. usually, this was cause of the site culture being toxic, and tbh that reason will probably extend to spacehey because this seems to be a site for teens to fight each other and form community the way tumblr was when i was a teen. though, it actually reminds me a lot of quotev when i was on it, and also a previous myspace revival site i can't recall the name of that i was on in 2020.

i do think that the state of the internet is telling in the amount of young people on revival or smaller sites like this, like the idea that now that being chronically online is the norm for teens, even smaller niches have to be carved out for people who want a space away from mainstream internet, where that wasn't exactly the case in the past.

i still like these type of small niche sites, but i think cause i'm older than most of the userbase i'm going to end up settling more on cohost and the fandomy mastodon instance i'm on rather than throwback sites like spacehey because, ironically, old stuff is for the young now. unsure, cause i really like fucking around with css, but maybe i'll end up reviving my neocities instead since i know enough coding to run one. it's just a lot more work
