opinion: y2k isnt an aesthetic you can dress up as, its a genuine time period

y2k is not just hot pink cami tops with juicy couture tracksuits and zebra print (thought that is a part of it known as mcbling)  y2k refers to the year(s) 2000(s), which includes MANY different style and subgenres. why we have a bunch of names for them, no clue! but some person made them so ig we use them now. (also can we stop adding the word core to the end of any object or person and make shitty pinterest boards about it bc why dude we dont need it) I appreciate a lot of 90s-2010s pop culture and music, i draw a lot of my personal style and music from my tio who i grew up with. he very much was the "olderbrothercore?" type of guy. he was a monster addict and loved rap and r&b with some metal as well. he unknowingly influenced my interest in 2000s music, style, decor, and video games. i recently saw him again and he let me have his old cds. for me, y2k is not an aesthetic and more of a time period filled with awesome pop culture. now not all of it was good ofc but there are something that really inspire and move me. i enjoy the style of clothes, the cool baggy jeans/jorts with details on the back pockets, i enjoy the hot pink mean girl typa stuff too. the main problem about ppl labeling things y2k is that a lot of time companies will try and sell things by slapping the title y2k on it when sometimes, its not even y2k anything? and make money off of people who dont know its shitty quality and not true. when we live in a world filled with overconsumption, people are trusting fast fashion companies to give them items that reflect a time period and wearing that as a costume almost and not as genuine clothes. i have fell victim to buying stuff to look cool even though it wasnt my actual thing (2020-2021 anime phase dont ask please im recovering) and though it made me feel cool or normal ig, i ended up donating a lot of my clothes witnin that year span. y2k is a period in time that should be respected, and profiting off of it and the pop culture behind it is just shady and fake. It doesnt give credit to the people who shaped it/lived in it. to those who want to dress in the style of y2k or get into the pop culture of that time, whether it be early emo era to skater dude to bimbhoe girl, thrifting is always a great option! I tend to find cds, clothes, ties, shoes, bags, etc. Also visiting a music store is a good way to expose urself to new music, whether it be vinyls/cds/cassette/etc, there is always some good music (and vibes) at a music store. finding other peeps who also like that style can help you discover new styles and music! maybe even some games (PLAY SKATE 3 PLAY SKATE 3 PLAY SKATE 3) that might get you hooked on a game series! whatever you may do with your money, fashion and your opinions is completely up to you. this is only my random take on this topic
