I've been trying to make sense of it most of life.
I think its an innate part of us to have some sense of greater connection, whether that's gods, the Tao, Samsara, etc.
Our local cultures provide a meticulously crafted set of answers to all our existentialist longings, constantly being revised over the course of millennia in a desperate attempt to remain relevant. It just so happens that Christianity has won a lot more bloody conflicts, so that is the resulting manufactured religion a lot people have in their communities to naturally join when they need answers to the unanswerable.
