sometimes i feel like we've lost the plot a little bit with
creative hobbies. or maybe it's always been like this once you enter "the real world".
i've made a hobby out of burning mix cds recently just because it's been a fun
process for me, and one of my best friends suggested i come over, record some of my
music, and stick it on a cd and make a cover together so i can have a physical record of it and make some art together. and i was thinking about
how happy that made me, and the fact that i wasn't even nervous about recording
my music and doing this creative stuff in from of someone else (which is
usually petrifying for me). and then i started to think about how isolating art
has often been for me. i think art sometimes involuntarily becomes this weird act of
superiority and quirkiness and "look what i'm doing isn't it so cool"
kind of thing, and that's what made art feel so weird to me. i love to write,
and i love sharing my writing, but it always feels a little strange to just
hear praise and self-deprecation when i share it (ie: "i could never do
that !!!"). my favorite interactions with people have always been when
we're on a level playing field, and i don't mean that in a "we're both so
cool and quirky and unique doing our weird experimental art things that make us better than other people" but
more in a "making art for fun" sort of way. i love sharing my writing
when i can talk about my process and other people can talk about their own
process and their own artistic hobbies. i love just sitting with someone and knowing none of this artistic stuff is for the sake of looking "cool" or looking for praise. i love working with someone on a project, not to make The
Coolest Most Unique Thing Ever but just to make something that is visibly Ours
and something we both had fun making. and it doesn't matter if it's bad as long as it's ours. i think there should be more of that in the world.
