Today's been a pretty good day. Went to breakfast with my mom, found some stuff at the store that I haven't had in AGES, and I got a purse and a sweater at a swap shop for $8. I decided to round everything out with watching a movie that's been on my to-watch list for a while now.
Blade Runner (1982) - 5/5
This movie is fucking phenomenal. For reference because I know there are like 6 versions of Blade Runner, I saw the final cut version from 2007. Pretty much everything about this movie is at the top of the art form. The film looks gorgeous. The shot composition, the lighting, the environments are perfect at encapsulating this dark, brooding atmosphere. The soundtrack is astounding. The synths combine perfectly with the more traditional instrumentation while bringing in influences from other cultures that in all creates a soundtrack that perfectly complements the emotions portrayed on screen. The performances are amazing all around. I particularly want to highlight Rutger Hauer (RIP) as Roy Batty whose performance is hands down the best part of the movie. The pacing is perfect. The story is not only effective, it is filled with immense depth and richness. My only complaint is the scene where Deckard forces himself on Rachel. That scene undermines their dynamic in the rest of the film while serving to make Deckard harder to empathize with. However, the scene isn't very long and is basically forgotten about for the rest of the film. This, to me, makes the scene feel out of place in an otherwise perfect film. Overall, I have to give Blade Runner a 5 out of 5 because of the craftsmanship present in the filmmaking and the amazing depth of the story. I not only recommend you should watch Blade Runner, I suggest you actively take time to watch this movie at some point.
That's all for today. I know I've been on a bit of an 80s scifi kick recently but, hey, I'm a sucker for some good science fiction. Plus, this is one of those cases where I can say that I've read the source material before seeing the film (I'm not the biggest fan of Dick's writing btw). Keep on rockin' on y'all.
