I started reading Berserk

So I started reading Berserk yesterday. It's actually my first time reading any kind of manga and dark fantasy, I've just finished reading the first volume, and my thoughts for now are that I find Guts to be a little bit edgy, Perhaps because he doesn't want to develop feelings for other people and then watching them die and feeling guilty about it?
