what is the melting point of ___ ?

  1. there is the outline of your hand on the sunburn on my back. my skin burns with envy for you and everything you are. you are everything i have ever wanted to have and everything i have ever wanted to be. your name rhymes with the clouds in the sky. your voice is an answered prayer. we lay on our stomachs in the backyard. bugs eat at our skin. our hair falls like ribbons, tickling our shoulders and mimicking toy limbs. i poured lemonade. you sip leisurely. you look so beautiful. i wish i could make the same burn on your shoulder. i will get this tattooed. i will remember you and take your touch to my grave.
  2. the markers along the path to you were clear as day. strong stones standing stoic. but the path out is so dreary and fogged, and i don't know how to make it out. i pray for sunlight till im blinded by it. my hairline and nose turn salmon pink. you laugh your big blue laugh in my mind. my freckles you had numbered multiply again in the sun. we've lost count. it snows into my eyes. i sniff in and hope i don't look like too much of a baby. forest falls fresh and green around me and i'm whole in its presence. surrounded, shrouded, grounded. this is what i was made to feel. a waltz through the moss. a quick brush through the trees. my skirt glides red. i'm never invisible. and unfortunately, you seem to love me more as such.
  3. but a path meant to lead away from you seems to have circled back. once again, the stones stand on end, like the hair on the back of my neck. your feet kicking high in the air, playfully awaiting my arrival. you hum softly a song i hold so dear to my memory of you. you knew this was coming. i've been coming back to you for ages. i don't know who you are, but i don't know who i am if you aren't there to cradle my soft and halfway-empty shell. i want the comfort of being held forever. please keep me together.
  4. and as i sit down next to you again, we overlook this town forever. you put your big diamond hand where it's always belonged on my back. i feel it scrape me. i feel it protecting from the sun, even if it's just right there. you look me in the eye and you tell me, "i love you, little bee, and just like love never ends, i won't ever let you go." my heart quickens, fear and joy twisting inside me. they keep their sweetly swirling ribbon duet forever around my brain, twirling purple and yellow around all my thoughts. "i love you too." you smile. i smile back. i look you in the eye, and i burn till i'm nothing but black embers and blue ash.
