There is only one future I see for the Internet and computers. In a few years, we will not have any "apps". No more programs, websites, or anything. The smartphone in the year 2030 will be preloaded with only a few apps. Tiktok, WeChat, maybe Elon's X app will really be the everything app. Each user will be fed a constant stream of content. Some AI generated, some not. But it will definitely be curated to each user. Everybody will see something different. It will be entertaining, it's supposed to be.
Will there be anybody making things on the Internet anymore? Will there even be individual websites? Or will there be a sort of parallel internet? Or many different little internets? The vast majority will be riding the slop train, while a few dedicated to having an internet that actually does what it was originally made to. That's what I'm seeing. People making their own creative websites, using chat protocols from the 90's, seemingly as if the world around them isn't falling apart.
I wish I could say that I fall into the latter camp. I use a wingblows PC, I have an iPhone, don't use my linux thinkpad (arch btw). Why is that? I have a very capable laptop made during a time where companies actually cared about making a good product. I'm able to run an operating system that isn't fundamentally designed to harvest every single iota of personal data from me. It runs extremely well too.
The point is that we can't complain about the state of the Internet while actively contributing to its decline. Make your own crappy website! Host all of your own services! Just try to wean yourself off of Big tech. It's easier and more fun than you think.

Is there hope for the Internet?

Thank you for reading! I just don't want the Internet to turn more soulless than it already has. We should support special places like this one.
