modern social media sucks!

Alright so before I start with this "rant", I feel the need to clarify that I haven't really used SpaceHey since like 2022, so I don't know how much things have changed around here.

Social media was created as a tool to connect with other people around the world, to share interests and overall just share what you did on your day to day life, but it seems like nowadays it's just straight up brainrot.

For starters, I feel like we're seeing what might be the destruction of creativity, cause people only care about posting stuff that'll make them popular and by consequence, earn them money. And the fastest and easiest way to do this is to follow trends. And here's where one of the biggest problems in mainstream social media (more specifically, tiktok) comes into play: microtrends. Trends have existed forever, but they used to last for longer than a month and they weren't so easily forgotten like they currently are. These microtrends tend to be based around very specific products, making people spend a shit ton of money every time some new trend comes out, just to be forgotten in a couple weeks. It almost feels like endless consumerism is the key to success if you wanna stay relevant.

And speaking of money, the rise of "influencers" has also caused many problems, such as kids giving up their dreams of being firefighters, doctors and artists cause they think talking to a camera is cooler; said influencers exploiting their own family and pets for views; social media content not being genuine anymore, but rather another product and most importantly, it puts stupid, talentless people in a place of power.

Don't get me wrong, tho, there's still a lot of quality content creators out there, but it seems like they don't have the same level of influence as the "bad" ones.

But I feel like the main issue of social media lies within non-influencers, usually people with a couple thousand followers (I'm excluding most fan accounts here). The content that goes viral is usually based around one of these three things: hate, stolen content or straight up ragebait. And this is so tiring to see, cause it's like: you enter twitter and it's just tiktok screenshots, someone saying how annoying a certain personality trait is (eight times out of ten it's just a symptom of neurodivergency), someone sharing the same "unpopular opinion" that is just common sense and someone saying something stupid on purpose so that people get mad (and it works every time). Then you open up tiktok and it's the exact same, specially the stolen content. I don't know how many times i've seen a video with the same sentence, like "when someone's music taste is so bad it lowkey makes you angry". And finally, I decide to open instagram and it's just people being extreme haters, like it feels like having fun is illegal over there. Oh and most reels are just reposted tiktoks.

There's so many other topics i could delve into, such as lazy, repetitive content (random show episodes with a slime video underneath); the destruction of subcultures and fake activism, but I feel like I've made my point clear.

So yeah, I just felt like sharing this cause I hate the way social media has evolved and I hope Spacehey can be like a breath of fresh air :)

Also this will probably be my last "negative" post, cause I want to use this platform to make friends and share my art, as well as learning more about what other people are into

Oh and sorry for any mistakes, english is not my first language ;(
