Journal Entry #95: 02/03/24 - My Birthday!

I'm 9teen yippee!

Also, happy February, happy Black History Month, and happy Leap Year!

In addition to today being my birthday, it's also the middle of winter and hackathon day!

Though let's backtrack a little. On Thursday I received a care package from my family. In it, there were four cookies, a birthday card, a form to pick up a birthday gift, and some tape and other adhesives to ensure that the posters in my room stay up. I opened the card and after reading it I almost cried! My parents rarely write messages on birthday cards since they're usually able to give birthday wishes in person. On Friday I received a message from a classmate asking me to visit an office. When I got there, I was given flowers! They were from my parents, and they weren't able to deliver them directly, so they sent them through an office! What a sweet surprise!

After taking the vase of flowers back to my dorm I realized something. The flowers make the dorm feel much livelier. I now understand why people gift others flowers. Even though it's barely started, this really feels like it's the best birthday ever. I don't think I've ever had this many people wish me happy birthday before. Also I was going to buy myself a slice of cake but I forgot, I'm going to do that soon :)

Also, I have a new perspective on the date of my birthday. I used to really hate when my birthday was since it's typically cold and dark. However, this year it's been a nice light in the dark since I haven't had much to do outside of classes and schoolwork. 

Now about the hackathon. It starts at 11 so I have a few hours left until I need to scoot on over there. I don't have a team, but there's a social hour to meet people and form teams. I'm a little nervous and I don't have much to offer so I may not participate and just stick around for the workshops and build something myself. We'll see what happens when I get there. One fear I have is that I'll get sick since there will be so many people around. Unfortunately the week after my birthday is going to be quite busy! I hope to have fun though. I'll document everything when I get back.
