Good Evening You Nervous Young Inhumans! Today's wonderful and exciting list if the ranking of all of the albums by Car Seat Headrest, the biggest furry act out there right now!
Car Seat Headrest has gotten me through the best and the worst times of my life, and I am ever so grateful that I latched onto them in the way that I do, so here you are!
I will not be including the two albums "Disjecta Membra" and "Little Pieces of Paper With NO Written On Them" as they are not really necessary for the full CSH experience. I will also not be including anything from his previous bands, such as The 63rd Fret or Nervous Young Men for that same reason. Well Let's Get Started!
13. 2 (June 2010)- The follow up to his debut under the current name, 2 is my pick for the worst Car Seat Headrest album. While the album has a couple of tracks I would at least check out, that being We Are In Space, It's You, You're The Asshole Who Did This, and Fiction I, I would recommend you only listen to this to complete the collection of numbered albums
12. 4 (August 2010)- This one album is supposed to be the soundtrack to Partydogge/Kate Wurtz's project Crow Cillers, and paying attention to some of the lyrics and reading some of the comic myself. I get it. But this one is also kind of skippable, unless you are a fan of Kate's work, in which it is good for that reason
11. Teens Of Style (October 2015)- This Album is the epitome of complying to the people who said "It's Good but oohh the mixing I don't like the mixing and the lofi ewwie" Most of the songs on here are re-recordings of songs from the My Back Is Killing Me Baby, Monomania and Nervous Young Man albums which are much higher on this list. This album is for those people who don't want to dig as deep into the earlier works of Car Seat Headrest, and it is low for a reason
10. 1 (May 2010)- The first ever Car Seat Headrest album is not a great one. It's certainly one of the better releases of the numbered albums, and is a personal favorite album of mine, but there are too many flaws for me to put it higher than anything else. The highlights of this album and I would absolutely tell you to check out are Kid War, Big Jacket, What Does OUJ Stand For, and Tybee Island Horse Ghosts.
9. 3 (July 2010)- The best numbered album, it is no surprise why people latched onto Car Seat Headrest because of this album. It is an excellent work of slacker rock that would go on to define the sounds of later albums. The obvious songs I would check out would be Portrait of an Artist as a Young F-g, Beach F-gz, Ryan North by Northwest, and Oh! Starving.
8. Making a Door Less Open (May 2020)- I do think this is a good album. I truly do. I think that this is overhated for it's different sound than the Matador Era. Some of the influences from Andrew Katz on this project are apparent and at times make for great songs. And Will still is making cool and interesting music. Martin, Can't Cool Me Down, Famous, and There Must Be More Than Blood, are all fantastic songs and are worth putting in your playlists. But the lows on here are the lowest they've been since any of the previous albums mentioned.
7. Monomania (August 2012)- I will never understand how this one makes a lot of people's favorite albums from Car Seat Headrest, but it is pretty crushing at points and I enjoy hearing Will scream "I just wanna have sex with you!" in Souls. The Twin Fantasy's Amnesiac, Monomania has a lot of unique charm that contrasts with the rest of Will's discography up to that point. I really want people to listen to Anchorite, Maud Gone, Misheard Lyrics and the previously mentioned Souls, because they all are excellent here and are slightly ruined within Teens of style
6. Twin Fantasy (Face-To-Face) (February 2018)- Now hear me out. Face To Face is a good album; it's just a modern version of the original. I like it for that regard. But I have gripes with this album. For starters, much of this album feels performative. The detachment from the original story, while makes performing the album much easier, makes it feel disingenuous and unable to truly feel how he is feeling. The power of Will's songwriting on twin fantasy was not the structure, but it was the delivery. Songs like Famous Prophets are ruined because the work goes from being a complete mental breakdown to theatrical dramaticism. Other times, the instrumentals ruin what was originally an okay song, such as Nervous Young Inhumans, Bodys and High to Death, with the latter only being ruined because of the sample that appears closer to the end of the track. The first is tainted by the sound but I wouldn't put it past it. Bodys is super bland now on this. I just can't see it being better in any way, shape or form, than it's original ending.
5. Nervous Young Man (August 2013)- The only Double Album in Will's prolific discography, Nervous Young Man's length is really two really long songs, separated into tracks over it's 2 hour long run time. Some of Will's longest songs reside on this album and most are scared off by it's length, to which I say is fair but you are missing out on some good music. It's got a lot for everyone, but the highlights for those who are unwilling to stand it's length are Jerks, Boxing Day, The Gun Song, Plane Crash Blues, Afterglow, and Knife In The Coffee.
4. Teens of Denial (May 2016)- As a stand-in for Will's time in college while cultivating his career, Teens of Denial is the best starting point for Car Seat Headrest period. The first time the band was fully together on an album, consisting of all the interesting young men. The concept of the album is fuzzy but follows a man by the name of Joe who falls into a life of drugs and partying to make up for his lack of social skills. After experiencing a mental breakdown and identity crisis, Joe ends up coming back to college fully clean and learning to socialize without substances. Tracks on here that could be put in your "Intro to Indie Rock" playlists include Fill In The Blank, Drunk Drivers/Killer Whales, Destroyed by Hippie Powers, and one to add to your depression playlist would be The Ballad Of Costa Concordia. Really check this one out first if you are new to the band at all.
3. My Back Is Killing Me Baby (August 2011)- Originally named 5, as to follow with the previous numbered albums, My Back Is Killing Me Baby is the best non-concept album within this list. A collection of songs that capture all of the best parts of the first 4 albums, and turn it into the first album many people, including Will himself, consider to be good enough to keep around. The Drum, Happy News For Sadness, Something Soon, Lawns, and P.O.W. could keep the average indie rock enjoyer happy, and the fans even happier. There is something for everyone here, and is the most accessible early CSH album if you want to know why people love the early stuff so much.
2. How To Leave Town (October 2014)- The feelings of lacking self worth, isolation, loneliness, and outcast are all present on the Halloween album/ep How To Leave Town. Containing some of the saddest lyrics Will has written as of time of writing, the album cannot feel more like a punch to the gut. From Indietronica to Cowboy Music to Slacker Rock, this honorary album was the most ambitious and daring project Will made. America (Never Been), Hey Space Cadet!, Kimochi Warui, and The Ending of Dramamine are top tier Car Seat Headrest songs, some of which I have listened to over 100 times. Each song on there has so much to unpack and unfold.
1. Twin Fantasy (Mirror To Mirror) (November 2011)- At the top of the list is the raw, confessional, gut-wrenching version of Twin Fantasy. This album cemented most of the topics that Will feels. I feel so much more at home with this version of Twin Fantasy. It feels like someone is speaking to me directly, telling me and spilling all of their issues onto me, and they are so incredibly relatable, but personal as well. Every song's words are so clear. Every time I listen there is a new line that makes me bawl my eyes out, because it stings another chord into my nervous system and shuts me down for the night. I have had crying fits in public because I will listen and get another part of a song. It truly is the definitive version for me, and for those who understand, it will for them too. The story behind the album as well being completely DIY in his dorm room on his iPod and Macbook is spectacular, and inspires me to make music as well.
