WNC Waterfalls

Full discretion: Some of the locations require driving on small country roads whether it’s dirt, gravel, or even water - gasp! Therefore, don’t fuck around and find out or you’ll be praying someone else felt inspired to see mother nature out there that day. Be prepared for possible outcomes! :)

1. Woodruff Branch Falls (Globe, NC)

Starting with my personal favorite. The picture doesn't do justice to the 20ft waterfall, but I couldn't resist posting one in its autumnal glory. I happened upon it during one of my mountain drives when the world quarantined. It's roadside and peaceful. The place seemed untouched by tourists and the few usual encounters were locals with their dirt bikes or mountain bikers starting their trail from the parking lot. Not surprised if it's gained more attention the past couple years; there’s been a noticeable influx of traffic moreso now after the pandemic. It’s a shame, I don't drive by it as often anymore.

Bonus attraction: Further down the road, there's a cliff covered in graffiti that faces the same view as the Linn Cove Viaduct. (For when you're trying to avoid the obnoxious line of leafers on BRP) The kind of cliff that's perfect for screaming if it need be. We all need a good scream sometimes.

2. Pot Branch Falls (South Mountains Gamelands)

If you’re gonna hike during hunting season, please for the love of all that is good wear some fluorescent orange. That also applies to your pets. Respect the activity; admire the nature quietly.

With that being said, this cute swimming hole is about a 15 minute hike from the parking lot and if you happen to have the spot to yourself, it feels magical. There are multiple swimming holes to enjoy and the area’s surrounded by rhododendrons. ( They bloom during the summer ) Lowkey feel like a mermaid here when I’m just chillin in the water.

Favorite things about this place: The little teacup spot under the waterfall, shiny rocks, big pancake mushrooms living out their best lives on trees, the white\light pink rhodies, how cool my skin feels after hours of being out of the water

3. Looking Glass Falls (Pisgah Forest)

Everyone should go see this waterfall at least once. There's enough parking considering how popular it is, as long as people know the right way to park.. A stairway leads you down to a viewing area, but there ain’t no way you’re leaving without touching the water. Come during winter time and the water may be frozen over. (Or stupid high) Come during spring time and you may see cherry blossoms. It's a perfect resting area after a long drive - there are picnic tables further down the road.  Leafers love coming here to fulfill their autumn-obsessed needs. They also need to learn how to park.

This photo of Corran Addison will forever be my favorite shot of Looking Glass. He had a major back injury, but the man was in a Batman suit. Iconic. Who knows; you may see people take out above the falls. There are some nice class 3 runs up there.

Adding more later!
