Good Dog - A poem about people pleasing

I am a dog on a leash. Smiling and panting while still being choked. If I do something good, you'll reward me with a treat. If I do something bad, you'll smack me with a newspaper and scold be. "Bad dog! Bad dog!" Although, I still love you. No matter what, I still return with a stick to play fetch. I will sit, roll over, dance whenever asked, Always complying with your commands.

I can't help it when I bite. I am a dog, it's in my nature. I wince and bed to be let go. I gnaw at my own collar. But my demeanor changes when you squeak the ball. I see myself dirt. Caked in mud and riddled with fleas. How can I not love the one who takes me in, even if they do call me a "bad dog."
