it's been months since the release of across the spiderverse, and half of what i've seen from its fandom has been pretty interesting so far. but the other half, well... they're either wildly incorrect or very questionable. so, here are some popular atsv takes, and why i personally disagree with them.
number 1: "pavitr is 12-13, and hobie is 19-20! i saw it in the art book so it must be true!"
this one is one of the more popular takes that's been circulating around the internet. yes, it was in the art book, but no, it's not true in the final movie. the art book is filled to the brim with concept art, key word: concept. a majority of the concepts in the art book were not used in the final film, and the "pav is 12-13/hobie is 19-20" is one of those unused concepts.
to help solve the pavitr age argument, pavitr does not look 12 or 13. he looks to be around the same age as miles, who is 15. also, remember that whole "hey so, tonight i was thinking..." line that pavitr said really playfully while talking to gayatri? 12-13 year olds don't normally talk like that. that's normal for 15 y/o teens at the youngest. (14 at the VERY youngest) i strongly believe that the creators of the movie wouldn't make him say that if he was 12-13 like a lot of people are saying. pavitr is most likely 15.
and to help solve the hobie age argument, when hobie is first mentioned throughout the film, it is implied that miles believes that there's some romance going on between hobie and gwen. that is, until the whole bait-and-switch reveal where that isn't the case at all. the creators DEFINITELY wouldn't have done that if hobie was canonically 19-20, since gwen is 16. i do not believe hobie's age has been officially confirmed yet, but i strongly believe is around 16-17 years old.
number 2: "gwen is a horrible person! did you see what she did to miles? UNBELIEVABLE!"
you see, gwen had no choice. she had to hurt miles, because miguel told her to. it was either join the spider society and obey their orders, or be left to deal with the aftermath of her father finding out her secret identity. she was told it was for the fate of the multiverse, so she obeyed. she left out the key details of the society when discussing it with miles. she tried to prevent him from helping pavitr save inspector singh. she lied to him about so much, but she was trying to protect him. she was told it was for the greater good by the adults who took her in.
and, she's working to correct her mistakes. she assembled the original spiderverse cast + new members to find and rescue him. she tried to go against miguel, and although it backfired, she was defending miles. at the beginning of the movie, she addressed that she hurt miles, yet she didn't want to hurt him. she is trying so hard to make up for the pain she caused miles. the people bombarding her with all of this hate clearly don't see that she is trying to make up for the person she was before breaking away from miguel's views.
number 3: "pavitr is soooo innocent and pure and uwu owo soft!!"
nope. nuh-uh. stop that. people who constantly infantilize pavitr and treat him like a helpless baby are absolutely, positively, some of the WORST people in the spiderverse fandom. he's literally spider-man. he's buff. he's capable of taking of/fighting for himself. he'd only been spider-man for six months before he was able to join the spider society, and that should add onto how capable and powerful he is. yes, he can be soft sometimes. BUT DO NOT MAKE HIM SEEM LIKE A WEAK HELPLESS CHILD!!!!
number 4: "ew! this person's spidersona is fat! i bet those webs would break in a matter of seconds!"
literally, SHUT UP!!!! SHUT YER YAP!!!!!! first off, anyone can wear the mask. that's what the spiderverse movies are trying to tell you. doesn't matter your race, weight, sexuality, religion, whatever- ANYONE can be spider-man. second of all, if spider-man's webs can stop moving trains and keep a cruise ship from splitting in half, they can support the weight of a plus-sized person. get real. use ya brain.
number 5: "beyond the spiderverse is taking too long!"
it took the animators of across the spiderverse FIVE YEARS to animate that movie. it took them like 2-3 years just to figure out hobie's animation/animate him in general. the spiderverse films are works of art, and art takes time. i understand, we're all excited for beyond the spiderverse. but have patience, people!!! the longer they take, the more whimsically fantastic the movie will be!!!
(also fyi, if you're starved for more spiderverse content, new spider-punk comics are coming out this year. also, i believe some spider-man 2099 comics are coming out as well, though im not sure if its this year or the next.)
so yeah. those are just my thoughts and opinions. obviously you don't have to agree with me if you don't want to, since my viewpoints may be different than yours. sorry if they're worded poorly.
