The importance of archiving (Kanye West - GOOD Fridays)

Part of Kanye West's website in October 24, 2010. The website had a section called "GOOD Fridays", with multiple free songs that were sent directly to your email.

- "What do you hope your legacy is?"
- "To be forgotten."

On November 22, 2010, the rapper Kanye West released his 4th studio album, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. Before it's release, Ye started a free weekly music release called "GOOD Fridays". Some tracks ended up on the album, other tracks were lost to history... unless you asked to receive emails with free MP3s for each song.

A snapshot from the Wayback Machine that shows the original GOOD Fridays download page, where you inserted your email address and the requested song would be sent to you.

Yesterday I looked for the original MP3s for each song, and the only place I found was... a sketchy free MP3 site.

I know it shouldn't be much of a concern, but MP3-to-MP3 (or Lossy-to-Lossy in general) conversion is not good. If an audio file is already low quality, why would I want to have an even lower quality copy, or a copy that pretends to be of higher quality?

I'm a simple person, everytime I see a CD/DVD, I think: "Rip it."

I like to archive stuff, it's pretty much a hobby for me now.
