What is a soul?
I believe that at some point in life, I think we have all had questions like “What is the soul? Is the soul immortal? What is the relationship between the soul and the body? How can we take care of the soul? ”.
We know very well that the soul can be a very open concept, and can vary depending on the perspective of whoever decides to analyze it. The definition of this is not really concrete, we can say that it influences too much depending on the religions or those who carry out spiritual practices or those who simply decide to study it.
As a thesis, I consider that the soul is a very powerful energy that hides and circulates within the body. That despite not being visible to the human eye, it is there and endures. And why not, perhaps the soul, like the human being, evolves by strengthening its essence and energy. According to Socrates, the soul is the place of all virtues, and these are forms of knowledge, that is why we cannot perceive the soul as something physical.
Beyond the soul not being something material or something that we can feel inside, it is what pushes us and motivates us to move forward. We could see it as that “breath of life” that is given to us along with everything that complements and shapes us as humans. Just as that “breath” is given to us, when we least expect it it becomes our last breath, interpreting it as the arrival of death. The soul remains, regardless of whether or not it has a “shell.” The soul never dies, you could say that it is immortal, the soul remains intact despite the changes or knowledge that the body acquires. The soul is that light that guides and accompanies us during our journey in life.
Regarding what the relationship between body and soul would be, we can imagine a fusion between both, the soul is responsible for the vividness in the organs, senses of the body and mind, so that, although the body has potentially capable organs and senses that are too acute Without the presence of the soul, I consider that these would be of no use, not even being able to exercise their functions, since I feel that the soul in turn connects with the feelings and the feelings correspond to the functioning of the body. For example, when one goes into depression in “a pain of the soul” our immune system deteriorates and some organs can be damaged because of this.
The soul is fundamental for a living being and since it is more powerful than the body, it lasts and the body fulfills a stipulated cycle. When the time of death arrives, there is a separation between both, the soul returns to its divinity and wanders in the afterlife or decides to continue experiencing experiences in other beings, while the body, being alone and empty, sinks into decomposition.
During the soul's stay in us, it is very important to provide it with care and protection. Socrates undoubtedly considered that the most important thing in life is the care one offers to the soul, and not the experiences that each human being must go through. The philosopher probably subscribed to the idea that to care for the soul you must first know it. The relationship between knowing something and caring for it is close. So, does soul care have a sensible meaning? Apparently not, but if so, how do we harmonize the link between the sensible and the intelligible? The care of the soul does not consist in the practice of abstentions or purification rituals, but in the cultivation of rational thought and behavior. A man's responsibility in life lies in being able to realize his conduct and actions, and to have a reasonable justification for what he believes and what he does.
(EXAMPLES) Below I will provide activities or things to take into account when caring for and feeding the soul in a healthy way, and achieving physical and spiritual well-being:
- Make time for yourself: Organize your time and prioritize the emotional needs that are important.
- When necessary you have to rest: In order to rediscover yourself, it is essential to do everything that makes you feel good and listen to your inner voice.
- Be grateful: Seeing each new day as a new opportunity will help you connect with what is truly important. Be grateful for everything that comes into or leaves your life, whether good or bad.
- Be aware of your actions: Difficult times are temporary, but you may long regret how you handled them.
- Practice forgiveness: free yourself from anger, pain and resentment, which do not bring anything good and only prevent you from moving forward.
We can reach the conclusion that there are several perspectives of the soul, and that Socrates is one of the first philosophers to identify it with the human being. However, Socrates' ideas are just one of many in the history of philosophy, and it is important to note that the soul is a complex topic and the truth about its nature remains a topic of debate. Since the soul is a subjective concept, everyone can interpret it deliberately.
