No Rock/Alternative Music Associated With Generation Z

Credit: DC Tribal Media

For the longest time, rock music was the genre that always dominated the charts. If you go back to the mid-late 20th Century, there was always new bands coming forth with this genre of music. With the 21st Century, the 2000s was the last decade for rock being big. Even if genres like pop, electronic, rap/hip hop, and r&b were on the charts mainly.

MTV/Much Music and other TV Channels dedicated to music still gave rock bands a platform. In the 2010s, we still had Warped Tour and rock acts. But I barely remember any rock/alternative acts that came out when I was in high school (circa 2016-20). This was the decade when Generation Z was entering high school and rock was non-existent. Most would rather listen to rap and pop, or if you went to a school with students living in a rural town, country music. Of course at the end of the day, you like what you like. What other people listen to doesn't affect my life. I just wish there was more variety in terms of music.

I started to get more into rock mid-way through high school because I was going through a K-Pop phase. But unfortunately, I felt like I did not have anyone to bond with over my musical interests. Which caused me to start becoming something I wasn't.

I think one part of what has in some ways killed it is streaming. Even these talk shows and other platforms don't want to promote any new rock music. Or even radio doesn't want to promote rock acts. New rock feels like bands who have been around for 20 to 30 years putting out new music. In some ways, I think it can be hard for youth to relate to older bands, when they are not the same age as them. I do not think many care for live music anymore.

One reason I have claimed I'm "born in the wrong generation" is because it's hard for me to find people around my age (early 20s) who like what I like. Cause generally speaking most people (Millennials) who grew up with 2000s rock, are at a different place and don't have any interest in hanging with someone a decade younger than them. It seems most of Generation Z, doesn't care for rock and that's a reason I try not to associate with my generation. Not to sound like a Boomer, I don't care for streaming services, Tik Tok, or anything regarding Gen-Z content. Plus many artists/bands do not get much profit from streams. In 10 years, I'm not gonna want nothing to do with music related to Gen-Z. Seems like rock music is irrelevant according to Generation Z.

I cannot change when I was born, but it sucks when rock music feels irrelevant according to MOST of my generation. When we get nostalgic for certain music, no rock music will be associated with Gen-Z sadly.

As a person who's learning how to play the electric guitar, it's also disappointing how this means there are way less opportunities nowadays to start or join a band because of how rock music is being ignored and slowly forgotten by society these days. :(

Also, I have a collection of burned CDs as well as an MP3 player with tons of songs on it (mostly songs from the 2000s, of course).

That is totally awesome. I still collect CDs and burn them onto my laptop.

Seeing award shows like the VMAs and Grammys barely promote rock music anymore is depressing. Then again, lots of music today is kind of trash. I hate sound like a Boomer, but Tik Tok has ruined music in many ways. I am sure there are small bands wherever you live. I don't know, rock music is practically dead in many ways.

i'm going to sound gatekeepy, but most of the "rock music" associated with our generation is generally from what it sounds just edgy pop music, so unfortunately, you're right. i'm sure there are some great up-and-coming artists from our generation out there, but i've yet to do any digging.
the only younger band i listen to is the linda lindas who are a pop punk-ish (i'm bad with genres band) and their members consist of a 19 y/o, 14 y/o, and two 16 y/os. even then, that's just only one band, and i'm not sure they're very popular outside of the mainstream (they opened for paramore last summer and are touring with green day this summer, though, so good for them).

As I said, Tik Tok has ruined music and also how radio will only promote pop/electronic music. I miss platforms like MTV and MuchMusic where bands could promote their stuff. Plus, kids only care about the mainstream and don't like rock music.
