dishwashers

last night i watched a video where they put cameras inside a dishwasher. it honestly looked really fun in there so i started doing some research about dishwashers. here's some information about dishwashers.

brief history
the first dishwasher patent was filed in 1850. later patents introduced movable racks. Josephine Cochrane, a socialite from Illinois, is often credited as the inventor of the dishwasher because she introduced her iteration at the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago, popularizing the invention. however, early dishwashers were not widely adopted because they were impractical and seen as novelties. they were top-loading drums operated by hand cranks.
the dishwasher as we know it, with a front door, wire racks, and a rotating sprayer, was created by William Howard Livens in 1924. automated drying was added in 1940. the first electric dishwashers were portable, standalone devices used only by the wealthy. kitchen standardization (wall-to-wall countertops with standardized heights) brought about the modern dishwasher, now incorporated as a standard appliance under the countertop in a kitchen. dishwashers have been common in American households since the 1970s.

innovations
modern dishwashers are energy-efficient and use far less water than washing dishes by hand. a slightly imperfect study performed in 2003 estimated that hand-washing dishes uses up to ~80 gallons of water. a dishwasher only uses ~5 gallons. however, the study only focused on optimized dishwasher loads.
modern dishwashers also sanitize dishes after the final rinse cycle. the dishes are heated to 167°F in a domestic dishwasher and 180°F in a commercial dishwasher. some dishwashers use an optical sensor to determine when the rinse water runs clear to create customized dishwasher cycles.

statistics
a survey conducted in 2022-2023 concluded that 52% of americans own a dishwasher. another survey conducted in 2017 revealed that 20% of dishwasher owners do not use their dishwasher. a standard under-the-counter dishwasher costs anywhere from $350-$2000. you should replace a dishwasher when its service price exceeds 35% of the purchase price.
