private accounts and screenshots

Recently, there's been a lot of people on twitter "exposing" each other over things said on private twitter accounts. For some reason I can't stop thinking about it, the more you do the more you realize there are a lot of morality issues with it, depending on what's being said.

One of the examples I've seen was someone “exposing” a friend for inappropriate comments someone made about a celebrity.

In this case I don't believe the tweets should have been leaked. The comments, while inappropriate, were not to the public, there was no way the celebrity could have ever seen what the person said prior to the “expose” thread. Doing this causes two things to happen: 1, under the slim chance that the celebrity could see the account, there is now a higher chance that they would see the comments due to the amount of interactions that the tweet got. And 2, you've now proved to everyone that you both cant be trusted in private spaces and would turn your back on a friend and will air out that business to everyone.

You have effectively shown that you cannot be trusted.

A private twitter account is made to post things you otherwise wouldn't post on main. Most people use their accounts to vent, talk bad, and share details about their lives they don't want public. Additionally, most accounts will only give access to less than 20 people, mine only has 10. It’s a diary of sorts, which would make the act of screenshotting and posting the equivalent of taking a photocopy of a diary and handing them out. It is, in my opinion, an invasion of privacy.

Taking the example as a situation of it being morally wrong, what would be an example of it being morally right? Although slim, I think it would have to meet one of a few requirements:

  1. Morally reprehensible, ie racist, homophobic, transphobic, ect.

  2. Expressing genuine intent to hurt others

  3. EXPLICIT permission to screenshot

That being said, I hope you’d use your best judgement on any sort of nuance takes. Obviously, it takes a lot for me at least to understand where someone comes from when a private account has been leaked. I personally think it should be one of those unsaid internet rules but here we are.

im hoping of turning this account into a personal blog of sorts so if you're interested or liked this send a req and ill accept!1 lmk what you think, id love to talk abt this! its an open disscussion so even if you disagree id love to chat

I hate saying it like this but anything and everything on the Internet stays on there forever, including "private" social media accounts.

If you don't want to have the violation of privacy happen, you gotta write in a journal or something :((

i guess, that kind of slipped my mind while writing... but theres still a difference between something making its rounds on its own and purposefully sharing things from private accounts with the soul intention of stirring up drama

from what ive seen its not usually real personal issues and is instead people making questionable comments and sharing negative opinions
