athena's flute

once. the goddess of wisdom, athena, fashioned the first flute out of a deer bone. it made a pleasing, melodic sound, so she decided to present and play it at the next dinner with the other olympians. however, once she started playing, she was ridiculed by the other goddesses due to the pinched face she made whilst playing. she became embarrassed and threw the flute down to earth, but not before cursing it so it would bring punishment to whoever finds it

as a satyr named marsayas was walking, he found the discarded flute and began to play it and found he was quite skilled at it, and started to gain hubris because of his playing. he became so confident, he challenged the god of music, apollo, himself. due to the curse on the flute, he was flayed alive. there are some descriptions of how the skin would move and dance if the sound of a flute was heard
