Entry #1: Spooky Season is Here

Friday, October 27th, 2023              Spooky Season is Here

The world is such a beautiful place and I no longer find myself longing for death to encompass me in his cold, tight embrace.

The world was painted in a misty blue today. It was a light hue, such as that of steel, or the sky before a storm. The warm-toned streetlights provided a comforting glow of contrast to today's dawn.

The leaves have begun to fall, and I am once again reminded how impermanent and abrupt autumn comes and goes. One blink and you miss the dewy smell before the rain, and the colours the leaves adorn as they begin to descend towards the ground; soon to be stepped upon by muddy boots and sneakers. Some of the unfortunate ones that fell first have started to shrivel away on the damp sidewalks, their bright warm colours turning unpleasant shades of brown. Their wet carcasses have left behind semi-permanent shadows of their former selves on the cold, damp pavement. The impermanence of it all scares me. If this weather was all I could embrace for the rest of my life, I would cling to it helplessly as death came for me. I would exit this world with claw marks left behind.

Halloween is approaching soon. I find that more people are putting effort into decorating this year, which makes my heart flutter with an ever-present childish joy. On my walk, I gazed longingly at the pumpkins and the spider webs. Many people are hanging large rope webs from their trees this year. It just might be my new favourite Halloween decoration.

A black and white dog barked at me as its head hung out of a black truck. The dog’s tongue lolled out of its mouth in content as it tasted the crisp morning air. A gust of wind danced upon my cheeks at the same time, turning them a pleasant shade of pink. I couldn't help but to think at that moment that the dog and I shared similar feelings of giddiness.  A few minutes later, a silver coated cat approached me and followed me down a leaf-stricken sidewalk as I made my way into my neighbourhood. I think that interaction made my day, even though the cat's face left me saddened as it stopped and watched me venture further into unfamiliar territory. It didn’t follow me into my neighbourhood, but instead decided to descend up a driveway and make its way into a family’s backyard. I hope that cat has a good day today. This world, and this life, is so beautiful.

                                                                                                                                - P.L Taylor
