> kitti's hog-nosed bat

the kitti's hog-nosed bat, (or just hog-nosed bats) also known as the bumblebee bat, is not only the smallest bat known, but also the smallest mammal in the world! with 29 to 33 mm (1.1 to 1.3 in) in length and 2 g (0.071 oz), which is about the weight of a dime, and have a wingspan of about 6 inches, which is smaller than some butterflies! these bats are about the size of bumblebees!

these bats have pig-like muzzles, with two wide crescent-shaped nostrils. their ears are relatively large with rounded tips. they extend beyond the snout when the bat is lying forward. their eyes are relatively small and partially hidden by fur. these bats have long and broad wings with pointed tips, and have reddish-brown fur with paler bellies. these bats have 28 teeth :). they have long slender feet and short thumb with a well-developed claw and a web of skin between their hind-legs. they do not have a tail.

hog-nosed bats crepuscular, which means that they are active during dawn and dusk, most active in the evening. a few minutes after the sun sets, they leave the cave, flying in a circular pattern above the cave entrance for about one minute before flying away in small groups to forage within 820 feet from the cave. these bats eat for about 30 minutes before returning to the cave for the night. they are active again in the early hours before sunrise, leaving again to feed and then return.

they forage by flying along the tops of bamboo trees.

hog-nosed bats  are found in the oriental region of the world. found in thailand, in the bilauktaung mountain ranges in the western part of the country, but can also be found in the south eastern parts of myanmar near the border of thailand, residing in deep inside small limestone caves with multiple chambers and dome roofs over bodies of water. hog-nosed bats roost together in caves in small groups of up to 15 bats. they roost independently, alone instead of clustered together with others.

these bats are independant creatures, living with only about 100 other individual bats, and are not social.

these bats feed on insects, including spiders, beetles, small flies, wasps, and bark lice. they use echolocation to hunt their prey, a sound too high for humans to hear.

hog-nosed bats are polygamous, meaning they have more than one mate during mating season, which is from april to may. female hog-nosed bats have one pup per year during the beginning of the summer's rainy seasons. pups cling to their mothers while they are inside the cave, but are left in the cave while the mother is out foraging.
