hamlet thoughts

just finished my first book of 2024, hamlet!!! I had to read it for my lit class but while we were covering it I only read some parts while I sparknoted the rest. I grinded out the whole play in 3 days and actually found it very enjoyable!!

I gave it a 4.5/5 because I liked hamlet as a character and his sense of humor. a lot of the language was hard for me to follow so I had to constantly reference no fear translations, but I still found it enjoyable and was able to grind it out!! I glazed over some of the more hypothetical dialogue, but paid attention to the bulk of it so I still knew what went on and how it made me feel. I think it was worth the read honestly and I liked the ending even if it was so tragic.

this play really makes you sympathize with hamlet in a way because he's expected to quickly get accustomed to this new environment surrounding him because everyone seems apathetic to the grief from the loss of his father and his own depression. i do like how he used everyone's suspicions of his insanity to his advantage as it was mainly him and the king that knew the truth while everyone else just thought hamlet went crazy.

overall, i liked this better than shakespeare's other works since i actually put more effort into reading this than any of his other plays. his language was definitely easier to grasp this time around compared to when i read romeo and juliet and macbeth in freshman year, but it was still a challenge.

I really like the story as well. I decided to read it after watching the 1948 movie, and I just love how lyrical the language is (I'm in the middle of reading it lol). I tried writing a poem in iambic pentameter but it's really hard, because for whatever reason I keep second guessing the stress of the words. Do you write poetry or screenplays?

i started reading this for my english class and ended up skipping around and only reading some parts while i sparknoted the rest for the sake of class, but i realized i actually liked the story towards the end of winter break so i grinded out the entire book in 3 days!! i write neither actually :c im slowly starting to get into reading and analyzing both forms because of my lit class but i unfortunately don't write anything of my own lmao

surprisingly i was able to pick up the language a little better after reading it!! still relied on sparknotes tbh but shakespeare is not too too hard though.

that's awesome! man, Shakespeare is still so hard for me to understand/get thru. Sparknotes has been there for all of us 🙏
