chronicle (2012)

it's currently 11:03pm and i decided to end my night watching chronicle and putting together some mock ups for my layout. i'd like to focus on the movie though; chronicle. great film, it's been on my list for some time now, and i've been meaning to make the time to watch it. finally got the opportunity, luckily. great movie about how abuse can shape people. i don't personally have any experience with something like that but i do believe it's something almost anyone can empathize with. usually when i see a movie i feel like it rattles me in a certain way, and pushes me to do something differently in my life or take on a different outlook, but i didn't feel this way about chronicle. i wouldn't say it speaks to the film's quality though, still a high quality final product with a unique found footage cinematography (word i've heard elsewhere and am now repeating to make myself sound smart). it's easy to see the characters as people you might've known in the past, and that gives a level of empathy to watching them in the movie. anyway, great film, one of many i'm crossing off my list now. i'm no writer and certainly not a critic, i just wanted to get this out there.

The only other found footage film that could compare as a good example of the genre is Zero Day 2003.

Before continuing further, I must caution that the film is extremely heavy in subject matter, being a found footage film released in 2003 dealing in the "video diary" of two teenagers who are planning to commit a shooting. However, unlike a majority of films that sensationalize or attempt to grant sympathy towards those who do such things, the film brings to light a component that many often forget, that being the superiority complex as in the film, although they have friends and family who are willing to help them, they want to play deity with other people's lives.

Cautioning also regarding the language of the film because of its subject matter, I really really implore you to forgo watching as the ending of the film has them carrying out their attack.

It is the only other found footage film I can think of that handles a topic respectfully, being heightened because it is a found footage film and possibly only even achievable due to the genre. If one can find it, the director's commentary is an interesting listen.
