PEEPING TOM
(1960)
Known by some as the first slasher, Peeping Tom is the only movie in this series of posts so far that is pretty widely recognized as a good movie! Congratulations. Confetti. This movie is incredibly charming, following the POV of the killer, Mark Lewis, who films his victims' final moments as he murders them with a blade concealed in one of the legs of his filming camera. There are some lovely shots in this movie and a focus on Mark's background that doesn't take away from the kills. The feel of the movie is a bit moody and tends to dwell on the psychological. The scene with Vivian, one of Mark's coworkers and a very endearing lady, is one that I absolutely love. While the film is a bit slower in pace than its descendants, it is worth a watch for its historical place in the history of slashers alone. Beyond this, check it out for the camerawork, silly girls, and exploration of scopophilia.
"What would frighten me to death? Set the mood for me, Mark."
"Imagine... someone coming towards you... who wants to kill you... regardless of the consequences."
"A madman?"
"Yes. But he knows it - and you don't."
