Often a puncture of the mundane should suffice.

For example, whilst returning from work, I drove past a pineapple laying on its side on the edge of the sidewalk in the midst of drizzling rain. How it got there, I know naught, but the sight sparked a whimsical, childish imagining nonetheless.

The natural framing of a structure and an animal sitting atop or within it works as well. Something about seeing a crow resting on a neon sign marking a gas station, an industrial sort of beauty.
