the window fogs with winter air
and the christmas lights across the road
chime in red and green and gold
beneath the sun and snow
and still the street is silent
and the childrens play is muffled
and through the motion and the scuffle
the christmas lights stay up
after thirty-first and countdown
feel the rumble of the city sing
as the cars come through the fleeting
the tired new years laughter pealing
and the children trudge to bed
as the parents look at window
see the snow across the meadow
the christmas lights stay up
now the nights grow ever colder
and adults drink their beer and wine
as the calendar’s one turns to calendar’s nine
the christmas lights stay up
