why do we have so many damn subgenres?

 During this winter break I've made it a MISSION to completely organize my spotify. Back when I used Apple Music or even Amazon Music (in the Dark Ages) my favorite feature was the ability to shuffle allllll of my music in a specific genre. I've been absolutely craving it lately so I figured it couldn't be that hard?

 I've got around 3,500 saved songs so like. Not too shabby... But oh my god I can't just make five different genres? My mind is blown away by the hyper-specific genres. I have THIRTY THREE genres SO FAR. That's insane!

 But like, in no way am I ever just going to put my mid-west emo in...shoegaze? I can't mash together my alt metal, black metal, metalcore, melodic death metal, or DSDM together? That's absurd. But so is categorizing four years of music I guess.
