So pretty much everyone always says to "show don't tell" when giving information to an audience right? This is obviously some pretty good advice, I'm willing to bet money you've seen some movie or tv show with the obligatory scene of a character explaining how everything works to someone who should know all of this already, but what can some workarounds to this rule be? How do you expand on a character's emotions or feelings about an event or situation they find themselves in?
why not..
Music!
In traditional forms of media like television and movies the insertion of music into a scene is a great way to help dictate the emotional direction of a scene alongside things like camera work, shot composition, dialogue etc. But in a less closed off narrative such as unfiction projects (ARG's basically) music can fill a lot more niches, and that's what I'm hoping to accomplish. Unfiction projects like the one I'm currently working on are unique both as a medium for storytelling and for their ability to include audience influence in the story being told which makes them great for different kinds of narrative experimentation.
The tricky part with these types of projects though is delivering information without it seeming unnatural and my hope is that by using music I can be able to shed light on the emotional states of characters when need be (like if someone updates their myspace page), be able to hint towards events that happen out of the focus of the story (like breakup's) and to help give an early idea of what said characters personalities are like without needing to write and record like an hours' worth of conversation.
Here's hoping that with enough effort, and coffee, I'll be able to get some real work to show for my effort completed sometime in the near future. I would love to actually have something concrete to show for the however many years I've had the idea for this project kicking around, but patience is a virtue for a reason I guess lol
Anyways thanks for the read, hopefully more updates to come so feel free to stay tuned
