i watched over 100 movies in 2023. wow! here are my favorites, broken down by month.
JANUARY:
1. Synecdoche, New York: Did i fully understand it? No. did it make me more depressed? Yes. Did i like it? Also yes
2. The Menu: Okay everyone on twitter is acting like they hate this movie now but I thought it was fun!
3. The Bling Ring: Another fun one!!! Soundtrack was way too fun.
4. Dear Ex: Super bittersweet Taiwanese film. Learning more about the characters as the film went on was sooo satisfying. Had me in tears lol
5. Bones and All: One of my top favorites of this year I've rewatched it a billion times. one of my weirder comfort films
FEBRUARY:
6. Tár: SO ENTERTAINING. Felt way shorter than it's runtime because the pacing was so well done.
7. Everything Everywhere All at Once: Cried on a plane watching this.
8. Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind: UNDERRATED GHIBLI. if you like movies about environmental issues or badass girls or epic music this is the one for you
9. Skinamarink: I love weird slow burn horror and this was no exception. Watched it in the dark with my roommates which added to the experience.
MARCH:
10. On Happiness Road: Animated Taiwanese movie. Dreamlike and cute and sweet!!!
11. Titane: WEIRD. Took 3 sittings to get through. Worth it
12. The Banshees of Inisherin: relatable. rough. another hit thank you barry keoghan
13. Columbus: a feast for the eyes!!!!! gorgeous and poignant and lonely
APRIL:
14. Spring Breakers: Still a banger.
15. Fallen Angels: Now one of my all-time favorites. If you watch any film from this list, I'd hope it is this one. Lonely yet bright yet dark yet full of heart...
16. Whiplash: bleak as hell!!!
MAY:
17. The Novice: Real as fuck for anyone who knows anything about rowing or college or being a lesbian or mental illness hahahaha
18. Minari: Gave me an anxiety attack which is an extra point in my book
JUNE:
19. Reality: TENSE AS HELL. Cool premise and considering the nature of the script i think it was pulled off amazingly
20. The Lobster: Funny and so dark
21. Jojo Rabbit: really great performances especially from the kids. broke my heart
AUGUST: (no july, sorry, i was in a ward that month)
22. Across the Spider-Verse: A feast for the eyes. So many colors
SEPTEMBER:
23. Pulse: Creepy as hell. Love oldweb stuff (obviously) so this was such a treat
24. A Brighter Summer Day: Lifechanging. Worldchanging even. Sad as hell. Drags you into another world for 4 hours and doesn't let you go
25. The Thing: Classic!!!!!
26. Cure: Same director as Pulse and even creepier!!!! I liked this one even more than Pulse.
27. A Confucian Confusion: Wrote a post about this one. So funny and fun and messy and reallll
28. Noroi: The Curse: Another oldweb Japanese horror. FUN!!!! AND SCARY
29. Theater Camp: my favorite comedy of the year by far. Maybe not as funny to those who aren't into theater but oh my god i was losing my marbles the whole time. so funny and has so much heart
OCTOBER:
30. Phenomena: My first Argento... weird and fun as hell. Music goes HARDDDDD and the practical effects do too
31. Rebels of the Neon God: i love you Disaffected and Angry Youth
32. Suspiria (1977): Finally watched the original!!! And loved it. Less outright gory than the remake, and also way more stylish
33. The Wicker Man: WACK. So fun hahah that guy got so played
34. Little Shop of Horrors: Camp. What more can I say
35. House: extremely fun. watch while inebriated (your substance of choice) for full experience
NOVEMBER:
36. Hackers: amazing soundtrack. fun characters. cheesy. oldwebby. my kind of movie
37. Paprika: best depiction of dreams ive seen in a film. gorgeous imagery
38. Possession: I couldn't look away. too good. was left speechless hahaha
39. Prozac Nation: TOO REAL. mentally ill girls watch this
40. Phantom Thread: Watched on a flight. dragged me into the environment... loved it. so visually pleasing so romantic so beautiful
DECEMBER:
41. Drop Dead Gorgeous: product of its time. amazingly stacked cast and so funny and entertaining
42. American Honey: Another long one that dragged me in and didn't let go. fucked up but real as hell.
43. Saltburn: I liked it idc what anyone says i had fun!!!!

just started reading and I loved dear ex too! So much that I made all my friends watch it I got sent so many crying pictures.. the colour grading is also so beautfiul

aghhh dear ex is too good.... I added the song about Bali to my spotify and whenever it comes on shuffle i get emotional all over again
