Atsushi is kicked out of his orphanage for reasons that seem to just be general assholery. when hes struggling to survive after this, he comes across dazai (after a failed suicide attempt) and his coworker kunikida. when they treat atsushi to a meal, they reveal theyre hunting a tiger, a tiger that’s “been hunting” atsushi as well. And after being offer money, he agrees to help them. but when theyre staking out the tiger, dazai reveals to atsushi that hes actually been the tiger the whole time, and offers him a job with him, at an agency where people with special abilities do good.
when hes given the job, hes also given a new life. but as a first assignment, hes led to believe theres a bomber in the office. atsushi is able to defeat the bomber by distracting him enough to allow the other employees to take him down. but after, he trips, setting the bomb up to explode accidentally. so, he throws himself on the bomb to protect the other employees. although the other ability users make fun of him for it, it reveals his true character. thats when its revealed that the job was a ruse, only done to test his skills in a crisis situation.
soon after that, they get a real job. after discussing the other members pasts, which dazai refused to reveal his own, theyre approached by an unassuming woman. she asks them to watch outside for any illegal activity, which atsushi is assigned to. before he leaves, hes warned about the port mafia and specifically akutagawa, who was just seen murdering an entire police stations worth of officers with ease. but when atsushi, accompanied by tanizaki, meets the woman in the alleyway to investigate, she reveals that not only is she in the port mafia, but she works with akutagawa.
Akutagawa quickly eliminates both tanizaki and his sister, placing the blame of their deaths on atsushi. this calls him back to his childhood of abuse, creating nothing but guilt. but that only makes akutagawa fight harder, almost culminating in mutual destruction before dazai stops the fight between them. even akutagawa agrees that he couldnt defeat dazai, as its revealed he was once working with the port mafia.
it can be a little awkward.
