how did you learn your own music taste?

I used to be an avid listener of pop songs when I was 16.

then, my father brings out his ultimate mixtape featuring Metallica, Nirvana, Audioslave and etc.

I started listening to Metallica and Nirvana and proceeded to find which band has more good tunes like them.

Thus resulting me end up with Slayer, Pantera, Sepultura, Motorhead, Candlemass, and etc.

now, i'm trying to get into punk mixtape >:)

what about you, guys?

I blame YouTube for my music taste. I've had internet access since I was young, so it'd change often but I always ended up sticking to the more alternative side of things. I was obsessed with Set It Off and Pierce the Veil. Honestly still am but I listen to a lot more artists now. Bless the creepypasta and fnaf videos.

ever since i got access to the internet when i was 9 i went on g+ and interacted w fnaf, ppg, creepypasta & mlp stuff and i'd watch vids or speedpaints that'd play skillet, avril lavigne, botdf, three days grace, or 3OH!3 in the back & i just ended up loving the songs and eventually the artists too (botdf is yuck for what they did tho)!! they'd also play smoke n mirrors, hide n seek, or that hush now quiet now song that i ended up liking a lot too, and i'd also watch animation memes and love those songs, then fan songs from indie games such as fnaf, batim, undertale, yaaaa x3

I was a little kid growing up in D.C who would go to cookouts and hear different types of music, my mom would leave the music choice channel on while folding clothes and treats where I learned about daft punk. I play alot of racing games, I have since I was little and that's where alot of my music taste is from, the prodigy, qemists etc. When I played forza horizon 1 its like I was opened up to a new world of music, and then I got pretty heavy into hip hop in freshman year, and I am a big fan of lupe fiasco.
Really I'm down with all music.

I was exposed to a lot of different sounds growing up. My mother's favorite band was KISS, but she also used to listen to artists like Marc Anthony, and Whitney Houston. She even had those 90s dance compilation albums, and (my personal favorite) a neo-classical cassette tape that tells the story of a lovelorn vampire called Immortal Kiss of the Vampire. Dad mostly listens to Rush, and ICP.

Meanwhile, my favorite artists around 7 to 12 years old were NSYNC, Backstreet Boys, Destiny's Child, Alicia Keys, Aaron Carter, and Aaliyah.

I was into a lot of mainstream r&b and hip hop for awhile (Suga Suga by Baby Bash had me in a chokehold lol), but then one day at the age of 13, I just started listening to rock and metal, and as a rebellious teenager, I had the audacity to pretend I didn't like boy bands, hip hop, or pop singers anymore. A few years later, I discovered a band called HIM. That was the band that really made me go on this crazy journey of finding new music. Eventually, I decided to openly embrace all of the music that I pretended to not like.

Today, I listen to all kinds of different genres; bluegrass, gangsta rap, opera, thrash metal, house, 40s/50s oldies, etc. The only genres I really don't care for is hardstyle, (most) nightcore, dubstep (derivative styles of dubstep I can take), and stadium country.

Although I listen to almost anything, I find myself drawn to dark r&b, synthwave, all types of rock and metal, new wave, and dark wave.

tl;dr: I learned I like almost every genre, and that's probably due to the variety of music my parents listened to.

i like that you and I technically agree there's no bad genre in this world. they are good in their own ways.

i find it funny tho that our parents play a big part in developing our music taste :p

You never know what cool sound you'll hear next, so keep them ears open!

And I think it was because my parents never ridiculed me for the music I started picking out, so I never developed any aversion to what they listened to out of spite... except for my dad, but it was funny. Like I said before; I discovered HIM, got heavy into their music, and my dad reacted something akin to "this s*it sounds weird and creepy." But I get up one night to go get water, and guess who I busted listening to songs off of the Dark Light cd...

The embarrassment in his voice when he said "they're actually okay, leave me alone!"

started off with my sister brain rotting me with kpop and jpop and i slowly took matters into my own hands... now i listen to literally anything that isn't mainstream music because radio music is just soo bad its unfunny. whenever i have to listen to radio in a car i lose a braincell. its honestly disturbing how these radio stations will literally brainwash you with same 100 songs for a year straight and nobody will complain about it except people with actual good music taste!

now that i look at my comment i realized i just made this into a rant about my hatred towards radio stations lolol

completely agree I couldn't imagine having a radio in my car (no bluetooth no aux no CDs) and having to drive 2+ hours.

i have to agree with this one.

most radios in my country nowadays just play overrated tiktok songs.

Honestly same but with my bestfriend. She's always really been into the more alternative side of things and since 5th grade I've dabbled in it I guess listening to bands like panic at the disco, paramore and korn like real intro level shit (imo), but back in november she took me to my first concert and we saw machine girl. I've been on a digital hardcore and experimental rock grind ever since. Also along with some more real emo music and heavy metal. I can say for sure i have only scraped the surface and want to get into some heavier stuff and go to more local shows.

In a very weird way actually, i started my music taste with Queen, just one night i decided to listen to queen and then i became obsessed one day later, with metal its funny i asked my friends what songs to put and she told me ''i dont know'' so i searched it on google and found Ozzy's song and liked it, and the rest is history.

I started liking bands in middle school when I listened to modern alternative rock like Twenty One Pilots & adjacent bands. Along with those bands, I picked up guitar & started listening to more rock.

Some time in the eighth grade, my friend showed me weezer & I became obsessed with them throughout middle school, so my taste then revolved around bands like weezer (weezer phase ended after entering highschool).

Entering highschool, I started to get into midwest emo & indie rock because of The Promise Ring (my emo phase probably branched from Pinkerton, I’m not too sure about that though). Then I became obsessed with midwest emo bands like caP’n Jazz, Brave Little Abacus, & The Promise Ring.

Nowadays, my tastes mostly consists of artistic rock & indie: I found Suneohair from anime & fell in love with his sound & writing; I’ve always loved Oasis since I’ve picked up guitar & Noel Gallagher’s stuff is great too.

growing up my dad made music and uploaded it to youtube and soundcloud, so by age 7 i was finding the brunt of my favorite artists through soundcloud and by age 10 i was joining their fanbases (on social media). it never really changed. i still listen to the artists i began listening to when i was 9-13 via soundcloud & youtube (shinigami , tag shai , yung lean etc). i grew up religious so for the most part i hid what i truly listened to and hid it behind popular emo bands at the time while having secret accounts dedicated to my actual favorite artists lmao
