FOXLORE ANALYSIS!!!

(in order)

Nothing at all

its a very slow and calm song about how the narrator wants “nothing at all” and just wants to life life peacefully and unabashedly.  she also seems to be seeking support and relateablilty in someone else. she phrases most of the song in questions asking if the other feels the same and then ends the song saying that she feels “nothing at all” and finally says that she would not wish that on the other person.

i talk in my sleep

it opens with the narrator saying she talks in her sleep and how she does this while another that she is presumably in love with while he is  “dream of dreams that have nothing to do with me”. its a very vulnerable song as she spends most of it talking about how her personal demons dont let her rest. we can assume this other person is unaware of the demons she is facing as she refers to her struggles as a language that he does not speak. and finally its a song about learning to heal and move on with it ending with  “i will finally say i am not okay”

Down the river

this is a much more resentful song. it opens with with the narrator saying how she has stuck around hopeing that this other person would become a better person and that he would prove her wrong about him. (maybe the lips and hands guy from pretty little things??) and how she is not the first victim that he has swept under the rug. she then sarcastically asks him “Now, tell me, when you start again

Where will you house your skeletons?
Or will they stay behind?” she is not the first person he has hurt but for some reason (money, position, etc) he has been able to get away with this scott free! the final line before the repeated “down the river” is a resentful “you where never the one to suffer” showing that while he probably puts on a big show of this ruining his life he truly is not ‘suffering’

Ribs

this song opens with the story of adam and eve. and how eve came from adam. yet the narrator says that no one gave up a rib for her. showing she had to grow up in harsh conditions all on her own? she refers to a savage empire that she owns, and i assume she is purely referring to herself and her life. she says how said savage empire is never to be “moved by the words of a liar”. presumably she was lied to and heavily betrayed by some liar. she also states that the “dark doesnt bother me i chose to close my eyes. it is mine”  maybe showing that despite the difficulties she faced she had overcome and now owns this hardship. and then she repeats that but not before she gives words of warning to a younger girl saying “Time has changed the metaphor

Now dust is not the origin of bone
Little girl, don't let them sell you any armor
All your ribs are still your own” probably telling this younger girl that she is no mans and that she has full control over herself. but the part after it feels more sad and borderline resentful.
“Oh, my precious child
How lucky you are (how lucky you are)
Handed down a shield for your tender parts”
the narrator is both relieved for the girl that she has a “shield” but also angry at the fact that she did not.

Curses

this whole song feels very similar to a metaphor for mental illness. the whole song she is describing how she is self sabotaging herself and how the world feel like it is ending, very regularly, and how she is begging and pleading with this person not to leave her. she is asking for this person to continue to love and stick beside her throughout the horrible times and the joyous times. talking about the “devil” (her own delusions or mental illness) is running after them.  she soends the song terrified of what will happen but also sure of herself as long as this other person is with her.

(im not rlly sure this 1 so idk if this is right!!)

Turn out the lights

this is a song of encouragement, similar to i talk in my sleep. the narrator is telling another person to “turn out the lights on your mind” or to stop over thinking bc how does that help them? and how they just need to but their demons to bed (i talk in my sleep reference???) it opens and closes with tye narrator saying that you dint have to listen or believe in everything thought that runs through your head.

Pretty little things

this is an angry, resentful even, song. the narrator is mad. shes sick of being used by men. sh opens the song telling how she one dated a man who “was all lips and hands” and how she can still feel his tough(sexual harassment??). the whole song she puts of this facade of callousness yet in small moments lets her vulnerability seep through. notably when she says now watching the flowers wilt makes her sad and how she hates watching pretty little things waste away. maybe said pretty little things represent her and her innocence? and it can be seen that through her facade she has become heartless toward mens feelings. she almost ridicules this dude in the song saying that he needs to earn her trust and love and how she will not let him charm her just become he is good looking. it can b assumed the guy then says she has been ruined. as she goings off and says “maybe you're right and maybe I have been used up
By another man's hungry hands
And maybe you're right and maybe I have been ruined
By another man after him
But maybe I'm the one who's right
Maybe you will prove why
Women like me never fall for pretty little things”

she then ends the song with the repitition of “pretty things wilt away”

Know how

this one opens with the narrator saying that she is not brave. saying that she only sticks to what she knows, she doesn’t like going outside of her comfort zone. and love is outside of said zones. she spends the song saying how she is afraid to love again. how she is trying to tell her heart she doesnt not love and that she doesn’t need love.

Not the ghost

this song is very very calm, its basically just the narrator reassuring that they are not why the narrator is hurts. that the narrator holds onto secrets and is haunted by the fear of disappointment. how this person is the only thing that calms the noise in her head.

the garden

this song is more angry than some of the others. tye narrator is suffering and presumably being mocked and ridiculed for it. her “shield” can no longer shield her. She is sick of this wishywashy responses she is getting from this other person. she would rather him hurt her so she can move on. she see this in the lines “Put your ear to my heart or set your teeth against my throat” and presumably he does! he hurts her. “Give me something pretty to wear beneath my blood-stained clothes” shows that while he has hurt her she is not leaving she is infact grown closer to this person. and it ends with her demanding that this other person digs up the garden for her. (harms whoever hurt her??)

AND BOOM!!!!
