i've made it no secret that i'm interested in doing what i can to help preserve games and i've come across something big unfortunately though i don't have accesses to the types of roms i need to investigate i recently was given a $10 flip phone which runs on what is currently the 3rd most popular OS in the US kaiOS this OS is interesting for how lacking it is but i've done some investigating into it a question that pops up in google searches about kaiOS is if it can run android apps the answer comes up as no however it doesn't end there turns out the reason it can't run android apps is because apps have to be wrighten in HTML5 (the same type of code this site runs on btw i will be bringing this up in a bit) kai OS does have an emulator (though you have to jailbreak it first) called kaiboy this emulators runs gameboy and gameboy color games this may just seem like a standard emulator but no i believe this is achieved through use of HTML5 as we actually have an example of just that here on this site check out this profile https://spacehey.com/magikarp i have no idea how well kaiboy runs but it was one of the things that peeked my interest about the OS the most when i first started looking into it since these throwaway phones typically don't have all that great of support from the hacking community now this isn't where my line of thinking has stopped there's currently a revival project of some games that are currently unplayable unless you have an old NTT DoCoMo FOMA 900i phone this is a japenese flip phone but the OS it runs was rather ahead of it's time the games themselves arent very powerful being about as powerful as a gameboy color so i thought back on those games then remembered it's not just those games that are being lost on that phone theres tons of great games that are being lost on it there are those gathering roms for games on these phones but there is currently no emulator that runs them so that got me thinking the tech back then couldn't have been so advanced that these games are wrighten in iso formats like android and ios today is it probably runs on something more universal then it clicked they probably run on an older HTML which is good news...sorta HTML5 is compatible with coding from old HTML as seen on this site you can grab a layout made for an old myspace profile and apply it here and it'll remain for the most part untouched (i say for the most part as there are a few differences such as animated mouse cursors no longer are) i'm not sure what kind of HTML these games run on if any but the kai OS store does need some boost in value so filling it with these revival projects would not just be a bonus for preservation but it would also give the OS more value aside from being the only one currently that runs whatsapp (at least that's what i see alot of people praising it for i don't much care for whatsapp to me it's bloatware) i would understand maybe having to set an emulator for downloaded roms to get around copyright issues with preserving these on kaiOS but still this seems like somthing that those working on preserving those old games should look into this OS has some serious secrets and i think if we cracked it it could open up a world of insane possibilities such as the ability to preserve NTT DoCoMoFOMA 900i games as i've discussed here please share this around so that way it catches the attention of those who might want to know this information to work on it
update!!!! seems that NTT DoCoMoFOMA 900i runs on java which is even better cuz java can be converted to HTML rather easily however we can't force the phone to do that work itself so it would make more sense to convert the code as part of dumping the rom
