am i wrong to feel like this ?

saturday, dec 23, 2023

so lately, i've been coming across a few posts on the layouts section by people using my layouts as a base and not crediting me. the thing is, i would be completely fine allowing anyone to use my layouts as a base, but the fact that i don't receive any sort of credit by these people for my work makes me a little upset.

to better explain what i'm trying to say, other users are essentially copying and pasting my original code, then changing little things like colors, fonts, images, etc. and then the "new" layout is posted with a new title, new description, and a new cover image. my layouts are basically being reposted without my knowing or permission.

i've seen this occur maybe 3 times, and i know it may seem like an irrelevant problem, but at the end of the day, it's my work. the least someone could do if they wanted to use my layout as their base code is comment on my original post and ask me. what reason would i have to say no?

when i see this happening it really does disappoint me, because i feel like my work is being stolen in a way. and it sucks because there will be people out there who will use these reposted layouts, possibly never knowing who really created them.

so my question is, am i wrong to be upset about this? i just want to know of anyone else's opinion. thank you for reading all of this, i know it was a bit lengthy!

no, not at all- what these people are doing isn't okay !! it's also a problem because if they reupload your layouts, others who have problems getting things to work will come to them for help- but the reuploaders won't be able to help, because they don't know how the code really works (I changed the pictures on the layout I use for my profile & I definitely don't consider it coding). & it's literally your work ! you should be able to decide what people do with it, because it's your creation, but that sort of thing is really difficult to police :c

i never thought about that, you're absolutely right! these people won't have any idea what to do to help people fix certain errors because it isn't even their code in the first place. so far tho, the reposts of my layouts don't receive much comments/attention, and so there aren't many people complaining of errors in the code, but i really wish that poeple would just take two seconds to lmk they were using my layout as a foundation, i literally have no reason to deny them at all

It's not bad at all to feel this way! You have every right to feel upset about this situation, using other people's codes as bases without permission may not sound like something very serious but more than the act itself I think what frustrates the most is the fact that you had to spend time and energy thinking about how to make that code, testing and fixing bugs to make it functional and look good. Also, putting all that effort into something and having someone else just steal it from you is very frustrating, plus it's not that hard to ask permission either!

thank you so much for commenting and giving your feedback!! seeing this happen does make me sad, and i wish people would have the decency to at least comment on my post before using the code, as this is all i really ask for. i’m honestly thinking that i should make my own blinkie or something with my name on it to add to my layouts to work as like a sort of watermark lol

of course you're not wrong. as you said, you'd be completely fine if they just asked for permission, but they don't. it's your work-- and frankly, art-- that you spent lots of time and effort on, and then changed and passed on as someone else's with no credit. doing such with any other artform or work is just as bad, so yes, being upset is totally justified.

thank you so much for taking the time to read this and give your perspective, i really appreciate it so much! i know these kinds of things are pretty much inevitable, especially on the internet, but i was just unsure about whether or not i was wrong to be bothered about something so small.
